Snow And Ice In The Northern Hemisphere 2012/13

There is an idea/theory out there that the extensive loss of ice cover over the arctic might in turn increase levels of precipitation in the areas surrounding the arctic and because it's cold, this precipitation will fall as snow;

"Explosive snow cover often follows major ice loss"

Contradiction? It makes perfect sense to me. Pointless discussion. Ended

I don't think you understand what ''nail in the coffin'' means.

The snow in Europe still there, and has expanded a little. Further gains in Scandinavia.

Not sure where else to put this so will stick it here, but Nattavaara in northern Sweden fell to -22.1C on Sunday Morning. A temperature unimaginable to most in the UK any time of the year let alone October.

Further my previous post here showing the NH situation, below is the latest update from Cryosphere. EDIT: the previous post is showing a continously updated map so is not the original

Let us hope we can continue to build on this trend, at least for another few days. Thereafter, I will need to check the latest forecasts as there are some mixed signals from the Stratosphere right now. Posted Image All in all, it has been an amazing few days and weeks, so why shouldn't all the fun and games continue into Winter. Posted Image

Hi Again,

That shot is looking west towards the Hohe Tauren National Park. That peak in the far horizon ( just right of center ) is Gross Glockner, the highest peak in Austria with its associated glaciers seen on the northern ridges.

Just a couple of pics from GlenCoe and Cairngorm to show current snow status.

The Ptarmigan camera is offline so the view of Cairngorm is from Loch Morlich.

I know the comparison has been made a few times recently, but looking at yesterday vs the same day last year, the difference is remarkable. Scandinavia and the Southern Canadian states are amazingly different (accepting that Canada is due for a warm up at the end of the week)

So people who understand all this more than me, what does it look like right now?

Is this like 2011 and we are going to get drips of the white stuff or are we closer to 2009/10?

This post from Mark Bayley sums it up pictorially.

We are doing very very well when compared to the average but at the same time, need to sustain it into the month of November, more crucially.

For the latest expectations concerning November, check out my post in the Winter thread, which I have linked to below.

GTLTW has hit the nail on the head. We need Nov to keep the momentum going so that as we enter Winter, we have the best prospects possible for snow and cold. On the other hand, if you are looking for warmth and a mild winter, you will be praying that the current setup will change rapidly to something more traditional. I.E something more favorable to an Atlantic westerly based pattern, or Euro high.

it would be interesting to see the snow cover at this time preceding very mild winters like 88-89 or 2006-7

Thanks, more snow in Western Russia and Europe this year, although snowcover is still pretty extensive in 2006.

What was 2006 winter like?

Very mild and wet with only a couple of cold snaps around mid-Jan and early-Feb.

What was 2006 winter like?

Winter 2006/7 was a stinker and was almost on a par with those of 1988/89 and 1989/90 were it not for the short cold snaps in January and February. That said, it produced more snow in my area than the following winter did.

Not much of a change - A slight reduction through Europe. Scandinavia looking solid though, hopefully it will stick through the next few weeks!?

Expect a lot of that snow to melt, Scandinavia is going to warm up.

Can't see much evidence of that Aaron, the 850's rise towards the end of the week for about 48hours but temps at the surface remain very close to freezing. After this though 850,s remain around -5 throughout the reliable time frame with more snow possible.
