Just dropped by to express my "meh" at the weather, everytime I think of going outside it starts raining, then I realise that, despite an optimistic forecast of warmish weather today, it isn't, and it's windy. Brief glimpse of blue sky....but no, clouded over again. Still in winter clothes, fire on shortly.

I think we picked a good week to go to Mayrhofen in the end - 2-9th March, Spring snow conditions on the local lower slopes on Sunday as we got our ski legs back, incredible conditions on the glacier on Monday with no wind and full sun all day, Tuesday local again as it clouded over and the wind got up a bit, then a good 30cms or so of snow overnight and all of Wednesday, setting us up for a perfect final two days - the last one exploring the Zillertal Area in glorious sunshine. The conditions for me were perfect - only one icy windblown descent throughout the whole week and we were never cold. The only minor downside was the slushy home runs, but give me slushy moguls over boilerplate ice anytime! We made the most of our pass and visited a few of the areas along the valley, will have to save Kaltenbach for another time. I really enjoyed going back to Austria - made a nice change from the usual high French resorts.

The temperatures have been crazy so far this year, but nice to see it dumping down today! Probably few good days to come for those lucky enough to be skiing now.

carinthian No, I haven't booked - keep looking at condition reports and forecasts - trying to see into the future. We were hoping to ski with some old friends in a new resort, (bored of France) and there are logistical reasons it was going to be hard without the added problem of not enough snow!

Whatever happened to the Worldwide Mountain & Snow Sports Discussion? I've just dropped in to see how the snow is holding up in Austria - might be my best option for our first week of March trip...

I think there was a bit of confusion over whether the showers were being fed from the North East channel and Europe or being generated in the estuary. The movement of the colder upper air westwards as drier/warmer air moved in meant that the ability for these showers to be produced over the sea just to our East was reduced. The precipitation was being generated locally rather than coming from the continent.

Surely these showers are not coming from out in the North sea and Europe, but they being created around the estuary, so as long as there is a big temp difference between the upper air and the sea, and the flow remains favourable, they just keep coming?

Anyone else realised their guttering is somewhat lacking as this passed through?

It's my first day back after a mixed week or so around the Dorset area and I'm sitting inside with a warm hoody on listening to the rain. The holiday wasn't a total washout, but not quite shorts/t-shirts and sea weather, plenty of persistent rain but only one day was a complete washout (and I was dancing inside a barn anyway!), I'd prefer something warmer and more settled though. So here I am back at home, and the one benefit was not having to worry about watering the plants, in fact today I've brought the chillies and peppers back into the conservatory to dry out and warm up, I think they are sulking this year!

It's very pretty watching it fall, but it's not going to win any winter wonderland prizes. Snow that melts underfoot doesn't really count does it?

Another wet weekend! I made the most of the dry weather window earlier to potter around the garden. Weeded the circle where the beans were and found mint still growing which is quite impressive for January - might have Lamb tonight. Dry interlude didn't last long so the grapevine pruning will have to wait. Looking forward to a change in the weather pattern...

Spent Christmas week in Hampshire and Dorset, now back home and one overriding memory will be wet. We did manage to make the most of the 2.5 dry days getting outside for walks and a bike ride, but being stuck inside away from home is hard work. Only so many films I can watch! Happy New Year everyone, looking forward to a dry bank holiday Monday
