  1. Not sure where to post this but today in Oxfordshire did anyone else get a mini tornado type storm? I was teaching so couldn't check the radar but it was very dark and stormy at around 9am and there must have been sudden intense wind over Boar's Hill as lots of plants got knocked over. Any idea? Many thanks.
  2. Interesting to see the pressure dropping so much since 10pm, hope everyone stays safe tonight
  3. Working in a classroom with windows open,( must ventilate as Covid is back in our school and I cannot afford to get pneumonia more than 3 times in one year) , can keep it at around 28 degrees until around 2 pm but then it’s up to 29. Horrible sweating, but better than being in our school labs last year when it was 38/39. Looking forward to being able to sleep again next week.
  4. Thankyou, we were lucky last weekend at FolkEast where the entire storm system went past while we were asleep
  5. Serious help needed: off to Shrewsbury Folk Festival by train on Friday, minimal camping for a change as no car, limited ability to haul stuff: Forecast page shows no rain, GFS precipitation model shows plenty of rain. Who is correct, and what should I pack? many thanks in advance for any advice
  6. Lovely mild dry day today, woohoo! any idea what this cloud formation is called? (Currently driving in Suffolk towards Diss)
  7. I was too far from the A 40 to see the ground, but the underneath of the cloud was being pulled down into points. I saw similar formations before, multiple eddies. We have had a v small tornado cross through our garden one it’s way to Oxford once, knocked a bit of our giant conifer down, as well as a couple of friends’ damage in a straight line in the direction the squall was moving. We missed it but got back to find the wrecked tree. These clouds looked similar.
  8. we just saw this lot going by, my camera ran out of battery so no photo but I like to imagine there were little mini tornado formations as it swept past. Very strange edge.
  9. Genuine request, are the rainy storms showing in the forecast for UK 10 -13 July likely to verify? I will be doing field-work on the rocky shore of Gower and prob need to buy more adequate waterproofs if what I see coming turns out to be real. What a shame we couldn’t have run the trip in June
  10. Thankyou all, annoying thing is it is for a gig which may eventually be cancelled after all if no one can make it so going to be a financially annoying day as well as hazardous.... All the best to you folks out on the roads over the next few days, hope it is manageable and safe
  11. Any advice on likelihood of being unable to drive from Oxford to Buxton tomorrow due to snow? And if the roads are passable, which ones are best to aim for? Asking for a stressed friend....
  12. AW are not know for their good management of water resources. I feel for farmers in that area, knowing that this kind of weather will no doubt repeat, and they are not given support. As much as we love a good heatwave, food security is not guaranteed if water resources are mishandled. I can’t wait for some decent storms now ️️️
  13. Amazing stuff I love this summer! I’ve been heating up water to do the dishes in the nice free heat. I have a question, don’t know where to post it - is there any pattern to winter precipitation following on from this hot dry summer? I remember huge snow falls in Devon after the v dry 1976 summer, but don’t know if anyone can judge by now what this winter will be like? Only because, Anglian Water bragging that their aquifers are 80% full meanwhile not implementing a hosepipe ban seems really annoyingly arrogant. Do they have inside knowledge that we are forecast a wet winter, or are they just stupid and short sighted?
