In Taunton - where it's relatively sheltered and safe, my weather station recorded a gust of 70 kph (44 mph) just after 5 pm.

Only around 8mm of rain today - a far cry from the 36mm I recorded yesterday.

Whereas here in Sussex hardly a breeze all afternoon!

Yet a Met office Ob of 30 knots gusting 50knots for Sussex , for past 2 hours down from gusting 57knots (66mph)

(that's over Strong breeze - force 6 22-27knots)

London's Cannon street station is currently closed due to overcrowding caused by storm Imogen blowing off part of the roof further down the line at London Bridge

Maybe on the coast, but not up here on the border with Surrey

For how much the local news (didn't see the national news) is bigging this up, I must have been relatively sheltered (I am in a valley and downstream of Dartmoor, so that may explain it) as some gusts were slightly above your usual 'windy day' level, but not properly stormy. 2 gusts on my weather station of 42 mph were the highest it got, and I am bordered by fields to my west. 2 days ago I had 45mph.

It was probably gusting at 60+ on top of a nearby hill that reaches near 250m though, and I was in Exmouth a couple hours ago where it seems half the beach is on the road (sand several inches deep), and there are drifts up to about 2 feet.. though a fair amount of this had been done before today.

That image is from Feb 2014 when dawlish was battered

The tweet suggests otherwise nonetheless the 'sea state' was extraordinary.

Near 17m waves offshore the Cornish coast.

I stand corrected: A wave of 63ft (19.1m) was recorded by the Met Office off the coast of St Ives amid the hurricane-force winds

Do you remember the photo of some guy standing with his toddler son in front of similar waves? Utter stupidity.
