What sort of gusts do we need to bring down trees? I ask because I've got to go out tonight and the quickest route takes me through  heavily wooded area, so I'd like to know if it's best for me to go the motorway way.

I would take the motorway to be on the safe side Lauren, Depending on the state of the trees anything over 60mph can bring down dead branches/trees. Im certainly stopping put here as the lanes round here are riddled with massive dead branches. Im hoping a few of the dangerous ones will fall tonight (safely..)

Probably around 60mph+ and certainly getting on for 70mph+, depends on how wet the ground is and if trees still have leaves left on etc... At the moment your area looks to be spared the very strongest of the winds, still be very windy though.

Nothing damaging? I thought that was a good thing!

Damage is good in moderation if it gets rid of trees that are weak etc.

Going by the latest GFS runs if you compare to the previous run the track looks lightly more southern, hopefully this is a sign of things to come....Still only going for just over 50MPH max gust though for our area of Devon William but who knows?

Let's hope, at this rate though we have more chance seeing hail, sleet or even snow showers that are more exciting on Saturday Night.

Just an estimate but this is roughly where I expect the strongest winds from Barney.

Two separate yellow wind warnings in force, surprised there isn't an amber warning though - http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/warnings/#?tab=map

The GFS 06z run takes the highest winds further south into N Devon, Wales, the Midlands and East Anglia.

Still looks like the central slice of Wales and the Midlands to be hardest hit.

It's a shame it's not about 50 miles further south but then there is still on more run to go :pardon:

There a two separate yellow warnings in force, with the dividing line running roughly from south Wales across to London.

This is for areas south of that line.

Well, looks like a good chance to test out my new Inspeed Vortex anemometer this eve. Impressed with it so far. Update rates are sharp.

0 to 7 mph... every 2 sec

8 to 15 mph... every 1 sec

16 to 25 mph... 4 times a second

26 to 45 mph... 8 times per second.

Spinner is mounted 12 M up on roof with 4 M roof clearence.

I'm right on (in...)  the boundary. Tbh, I'd be happy to be in the weaker zone to the south, which only just justifies a warning, based on the windspeeds being talked about.

Is this site totally accurate? Surrey posted that the storm was at 978mb earlier and the latest is showing 979mb (obviously near as dammit, but marginally filling) I'm surprised if the filling phase is starting already?
