We will need some significant respite after the anticipated deluge over the next 24-36 hours if we are to prevent further flooding misery next week. The ground is saturated and rivers are close to breaking point.. expecting many flooding incidents over the weekend.

Oh dear another very uninviting morning for stepping outside. Heavy rain and gale force winds, hooray!! The A591 between here and Ambleside is already closed, other roads in the county also closed, expect flooding misery and further road disruption over the weekend - bad for weekend Christmas trade and local fairs etc..

Yes - I have relatives in Ings - we were going up tomorrow - I take it the A591 is flooded at the usual place in Rydal - or the Sun Inn at Troutbeck?

Darren Bett mentioned a 'Red' warning for heavy rain in Cumbria on Radio5Live but I can't see it showing on met office.  Still Amber.  Fingers crossed the flooding isn't too bad up there.  It's windy here but mercifully the rain appears to have retreated northwards.

Yep it's on it's way according the latest BBC forecast

Red Warning (Rain)

Tough bunch Cumbrians - but the rain has stalled on radar not budging over the park - clear to the NW of the IOM but another band is following.

Speaking of water heading down hills...

This posted from the Storm/Severe Weather thread - Scary when you think all that water has to go somewhere.... generally in areas already now flooded.

Yes the A591 is closed from Keswick to Windermere and only just passable between here and Kendal - ill advised though... Many roads in and out of Kendal are blocked.

The rain is relentness and not forecast to ease until midnight. Many similarities with November 2009. I've seen pictures of marooned cars. If thinking about travelling to central lakes today - advice, don't bother.

On a par with November 2009, could end up even worse here. All roads in and out of Windermere are blocked, shops shut etc.

This is concerning - radar shows no let up - just hanging there with big echoes over Grasmere.

Rain appears to be moving out of South West Scotland, but still very heavy in Cumbria.  There will be some shift eastwards eventually overnight but it will be slow progress and might have a sting in it's tail.

Edit: latest from BBC

Five more severe flood warnings issued

Posted at17:06

There are now 31 severe flood warnings across the north of Egnland according the Environment Agency.

The five new warnings affect the Cockermouth area.
