For YATTON, North Somerset

Description:

01st-10th

This was the driest period of the month. The 03rd-05th was predominantly cloud with minimal sunshine, a few showers on the 05th and registering warm nights. The 01st improved and the 02nd was warm and sunny with a high of 25.7C. Early cloud cleared on the 06th and a sunnier spell followed. The 07th and 08th were both sunny and warm with 26.1C on the 08th. The 09th remained warm but with sunny intervals but more cloud. A trough moved through on the 10th bringing some heavy showers during the morning but cleared with sunshine in the afternoon.

11th-14th

This period was characterised by one of the biggest plume fails I can remember. The 11th and 12th were fine and dry, sunshine hazy on the 11th under the edge of a lingering front to the southeast, but it was warm and sunny on the 12th with a high of 25.6C. The 13th and 14th were dull and very humid, dry on the 13th, outbreaks of moderate to heavy rain on the 14th.

15th-18th

A fresher but dry period followed. It was sunniest on the 15th though the 17th and 18th both saw lengthy spells of warm sunshine between convective cloud. The 17th reached 24.4C The 16th was cloudier.

19th-23rd

The most humid spell of the month arrived after the first autumnal day of the month on the 19th. After a fine start, it became wet and quite windy on the 19th, a maximum gust of 24mph recorded in the afternoon and a low maximum of 16.7C. The rest of the period was considerably warmer. The 20th and 21st were both dry and warm but breezy with predominant cloud cover and minimal sunshine. A mild minimum of 17.2C was recorded on the 21st. The 22nd was the warmest day of the month with 27.8C recorded before thunderstorms broke out in the afternoon. 14.2mm was recorded in 25 minutes during a thunderstorm ending at 17:30. The 23rd was the wettest day of the month as, after early downpours with thunder cleared, a slow-moving front brought continuous rain until a late afternoon clearance.

24th-31st

The remainder of the month was changeable. The 24th was particularly cool and wet with a brisk northeasterly wind (this has been the worst Monday of August for quite a few years now!) The 25th was dull with outbreaks of drizzle. A more active front moved through early on the 26th before clearing with sunshine in the afternoon. The 27th and 28th saw scattered heavy showers, drenching my workplace but avoiding my weather station, but also providing lengthy sunny spells. It was a cool start on the 28th with a minimum of 09.9C. The 29th was fine and dry with sunny spells. The closing days were dull and calm with outbreaks of rain that turned heavy early on the 31st before clearing by midday.

Overall

More like how I would expect September to turn out with a drier and usable period before turning much more unsettled from the 19th. Fortunately the best weather coincided with the Bristol Balloon Fiesta, and all but one weekend (the Bank Holiday) featured dry, often warm and sunnier weather at some point. Where the notable factor affecting June and July was wind, August's was the below average sunshine total. Equally notable is the wetness of the month without giving the impression of such. I rate this month at 6/10 - the month lacked any proper heat, settled spell of 5 days or more, and featured too many 'nothing' days.

Average high: 21.1C

Average low: 12.6C

Rainfall: 91.8mm

Rain days >1mm: 8

Very average temperatures, well above normal rainfall. Average number of days with rain in August is around 9, so despite the very high rainfall total, it didn't feel that wet. July had more rain days with less rain. Over hall fell on the 22nd and 23rd alone.

It proved to be the best month of summer - but was definitely not the sunniest in 2015, as that accolade still belongs to bloomin' April!

Nice big area of anomalous rainfall for my area of Yorkshire thanks to the thunderstorms.

August - Hobart, Tasmania

A decidedly wintery month. This was Hobart's coldest August for overall mean temperature since 1976 with the lowest maxima since 1992 and the lowest minima since 1952. For Tasmania as a whole it was the third coldest August since records began in 1910 with abundant snow in the highlands which produced a number of emergency service rescues throughout the month of stranded motorists and bushwalkers. Temperature anomalies are 1981-2010 comparisons

Average maximum:  12.4 ( -1.3 )

Average minimum:  3.7 ( -2.0 )

Rainfall:  64mm ( average 54mm )

Rain days (+1mm ):  12/from 16

An exceptional number of low level snow events which covered most of the slightly elevated metropolitian area with snow this month. Light snow settled at or near sealevel on the 3rd, and to near 200m on the 5th and to 200m on the 17th. In a typical year Hobart will have a maximum of 2 or 3 snow days at elevation 200-300m with falls closer to 200m far less common. It's at this lower level that major roads and services become affected. The first two cold outbreaks came at the final stages of a classic winter weather pattern with intense cold lows to the south and a series of fronts bringing bands of showers with descending snowfall levels. Occasionally windy with breaks of sunshine. 20mm during the first week. The third significant cold change at mid month was brief, in a month that was largely settled with light winds under anomalous high pressure at Tasmania latitude. Persistently cold nights ( especially inland ) but brief milder interludes between weak fronts bringing neglible rainfall amounts. At the end of the month a troublesome low off the NSW coast moved south and strengthened over the Tasman Sea, whilst a new low with a pool of very cold air moved up from the south to be the near the south-east coast. Those systems combined to give Hobart it's wettest day of the month ( 26mm ) with heavy snow to near 400m for a time, stranding motorists unawares on a major highway in the south. Hail settled in many suburbs with sleet in higher parts.  Certainly a great winter month for a bit of drama, it was really getting to a stage where I thought we'd never see another winter month like this again.

Extremes in daily temperature for August ( Records since 1882  )

Highest maximum:  18.0...21st ( Record 24.5 in 1977 )

Lowest maximum:  7.2....3rd ( Record 5.5 in 1974 )

Highest minimum:  8.5....22nd ( Record 15.0 in 2005 )

Lowest minimum:  1.0....3rd ( Record -1.8 in 1962 )

This is surprising, we only had 55mm here - well below normal, continuing the theme since November last year.

It's the nature of summer rains though that when it does rain it can be a lot in a short time if you're unlucky.

August 2006 was the wettest month I've recorded at 206mm

I didn't realise August 2006 was so wet up north, it was quite dry down in this part of the world. The monsoon didn't start in earnest here until September. August 2004 on the other hand...

My statistics for central Reading in August 2015:

Average maximum: 21.3
Average minimum: 13.5
Average for month: 17.4

Highest maximum: 29.8 (August 22)
Lowest maximum: 16.1 (31)
Highest minimum: 18.0 (21)
Lowest minimum: 8.3 (28)

Frosts: none recorded

No thunder heard.

Rainfall: Reading University shows 77mm for the month, which is about 150% of average.
Sunshine: Reading University shows 148 hours for the month, which is about 75% of average.

A dull, wet and rather cool month, the worst of the summer in this area.  In general the first week was quite warm and pleasant and there were one or two warm days after that, notably the one-off on the 22nd that almost made 30C, but otherwise the month was pretty nondescript until a very wet last week culminating in our coldest August Bank Holiday since 1986.  I notice reports from the north showing most of their rainfall being from storms - here it was just several days of plain old rain, and looking at the anomaly maps the folks near the south coast have had an even worse month than we have.

As the summer seems to have improved in the north and west of the UK from a poor start, so it has continued to go downhill here in the south.  We seem to have been having a long run of poor Augusts (with the exception of 2013), and this year continues the trend.
