In the early hours of 20 January 2005, several parts of Derbyshire, Yorkshire and County Durham experienced wind speeds that reached severe gale force. The cause for these winds, including gusts in excess of the geostrophic wind speed, was a lee wave in the boundary layer. These gusts uprooted trees and caused some minor damage, including the toppling of high-sided vehicles, as reported in several newspapers, such as the Yorkshire Post on 21 January.

Not sure if this is what i witnessed i think it was 2005 about 9am and the skies went extremely dark and the street lights came on, it got really windy for about 20 minutes then stopped i thought it was weird at the time because it was like we where going to experience a storm but we did not get any rain or thunder

I remember this well, living in Sheffield at the time. I was surprised by the lack of coverage.

Went for a drive afterwards and there were wheelie bins all over the place.

It does happen from time to time. There was a gust of 99mph (sustained speed of 61mph) in Leeds in February 1990, probably caused by something similar.

Probably the most serious was the severe gale in the Sheffield area in autumn 1961 I think, partly lee wave, partly funnelling along a particular valley.

Must be a note of it somewhere.
