Tropical Cyclone Raquel

A highly unusual tropical cyclone has formed in the Coral Sea, north of the Solomon Islands. This system is a freak in the fact that the South Pacific season finishes in late April, and we are nearly in July. The system is quite close to the equator, but is moving south along the western side of a ridge to the east. Shear is moderate, but 25P should still strengthen over warm waters until it moves south once it's cleared the Solomon Islands, where it will encounter higher shear and cooler sea temps.

25P has been named Raquel, and has winds of 45kts according to JTWC. The cyclone is bringing very heavy rains to the Solomon Islands currently, and damaging winds. JTWC expect a peak of 60kts before weakening occurs.

First recorded July cyclone follows Queensland’s warmest first half of year

A TROPICAL cyclone that has formed north of the Solomon Islands is the first that Queensland forecasters have ever recorded in July.

Cyclone Raquel, a meteorological oddity, is more than 2000km from the Queensland coast and not expected to have any impact, apart from the possibility of big seas in coming days

Pretty neat satellite image taken yesterday showing Chan-hom in the Western Pacific (the northern cyclone) and Raquel in the Southern Pacific (the southern cyclone):

Raquel's peak was 45kts. Strong shear has significantly weakened Raquel today, and BOM have downgraded Raquel to a remnant low. JTWC may well follow suit soon as the LLCC is exposed from the shrinking area of deep convection. Raquel has actually been drifting back to the northeast today instead of continuing south through the Solomon Islands, but should turn back to the south then southwest soon. Restrengthening is not expected due to continued shear.

Convection has exploded over the LLCC of Raquel this evening, and JTWC are continuing advisories with winds of 35kts. Some restrengthening is now expected before Raquel attempts to cross the Solomon Islands again.

A bizarre track for a bizarre cyclone!

Raquel has degenerated into a remnant low due to shear has it heads back through the Solomon Islands. JTWC forecast a low risk of regeneration as convection is still quite deep to the southwest of the centre, and the circulation is still well defined. Even if regneration does occur, the long term future of Raquel is bleak has even higher shear awaits south of the Solomon Islands.
