Hot and bothered by London's heat escalator

Whilst researching a blog on historic heatwaves I came across some notable statistics about heat in the area of the capital...

 

"There are 2.5 times as many hot days during summer in London as there were 100 years ago - that's the result I have found while looking at data for Greenwich going back to 1851.

Very hot conditions, where the mean daily temperature is 23.5°C or higher, as defined by the Met Office's Heat-Health Watch System, have been achieved in this area on 199 days since 1852."

Urban Heat Island, too many people and high rise buildings, indeed overpopulation in such a small area as the Greater London area are to blame on the higher temperatures......

What is more notable is the lack of cold nights below freezing.

If you consider London to be densely populated look at LA, very often the suburbs on winter nights are 5C cooler than Westminster for instance. Concrete slabs and dark surfaces of these buildings retain a lot of heat although it is encouraging to see people venturing in roof gardens so the UHI is minimised.

Seems Higher temps have only occurred in the last 30-40 years so buildings and over population wouldn't be the main factor..the increased amount of traffic and the fact we have switched to a 24 hour society may be the cause.

Maybe something is causing 'warming' and the frequency of hot periods is increasing as we warm?
