Just had two frost free nights after several days of 0c first thing in the morning and nature has burst into life. Have had a ground frost in June around midsummers day in a light northerly airstream and again in August with similar airstream . July is really the only ground frost free month here

I think our latest air frost ever was 25th June in about 1977
Most tender plants were out and potatoes were up so they were completely blackened.
Bracken fronds were opening and were also killed back, but needless to say it recovered entirely unlike the garden plants.
Frosts in mid-May are normal e.g. 10th-14th May 2010 which had two nights below -4C

2010 was a very curious year all round.

15 air frosts so far in April at my family home in Perthshire. Last night missed out at +1C. More to come by the end of the month despite more cloud and precipitation. Here near the East coast only forty miles away no air frosts yet in April though a couple of close calls.

Plenty ground frosts though and those will occur at least until late May. Like Northernlights August ground frosts are relatively common as the nights lengthen and only July is unlikely to see any.

First morning without frost in the last 4 days, low of 6.8C, which I think is the 3rd highest minimum of the month so far here.

Looks like rain will be arriving in a little under an hour too. Back to frost by tomorrow night though.

Had a ground frost here on the 23rd April.Living in a valley next to a brook doesn't help.We tend to get very early frosts and very late ones as well.

Frost in late April is fairly common, especially when high pressure is overhead or under a light northerly or easterly drift.

We tend to see out last air frost by mid  May and our last ground frost by early June, some year's can see ground frosts well into June, other years can see barely any ground frost in May..

just sneaked an air frost. Dry air means it isn't very noticeable though.

-0.3C here this morning, very little frost visible though. Max today might not get above 10C today (currently 7.2C) and another air frost in possible tonight.

Very frosty here this morning with -2.7C here in my valley location just after 6:00am this morning. Keep those tender plants in or protected for the time being

White out this morning. Even at 8am the frost was still on the grass in the shaded spots. A low of -2.7C around 6am. Most of the rest of the night the temp varied between -0.3C and -1.0C. We've had several air and ground frosts so far in April.

Edit: I see Gibby's low temp was around the same time as here, and about the same degree too.

-1.1C here this morning, the coldest minimum in April since 2008. The previous latest spring air frost here was 26th April 1989, so its actually the latest since May 1979 (36 years!).

Dropped to 2C here, a frost on the grass and rooftops.

That said it's now 12C here and rising.

Yet again what should have been a noteworthy cold night ruined by wind. Clear skies and snowcover and all it managed here was a pathetic -0.6C.

I've had lower in May without snow and given it was down at +0.4C at 7pm yesterday it is very lame. It got down to -0.4C as late as the 20th May in 2012 following a double figure max the previous day.

The lowest temperatures are always recorded in Northern Ireland or the Western Highlands nowadays rather than the likes of Aviemore, Glenlivet, Braemar and Aboyne. The wind just never lets up in the east  :wallbash:

Actually didn't get an air frost the Davis had one of those days where the actual temp varies a lot from the Stevenson screen a few feet away so we just hit 0.0C

A slight ground frost and a thin layer of ice on the cars this morning, with a minimum of 1.9.  By this time of year air frosts are quite rare here (we are near the town centre) - and so far in 12 years here I haven't yet recorded an air frost in May.

I find it hard to believe you haven't recorded an air frost in May unless you are high up which you must be, local river valleys around here get very cold in the Spring, air frosts in May are very common in river valleys in the midlands.

Firstly, reef said he had an air frost in May. Secondly, Hedon is nowhere near the Midlands, it's near the coast!
