Ever cautious, I will go with a near average 11.5 degrees. It will be a colder than average start.

May is my favourite month, it can be the best month of the year in terms of dry sunny weather, but recently has failed to deliver anything particularly sustained dry sunshine and temp wise. First half of May 08 the last time we saw a lengthy warm settled sunny spell. Late May 2012 was very good as well. May 10 produced high maxima for a couple of days.

It is a wonderful month full of promise of good things ahead, with spring growth bursting into full gear, an excellent month for getting out and about with often very clear air, no hazy sultry airstreams just yet and ever increasingly longer days. It is on average a far sunnier month than August and often comes out sunnier than July and tends to be drier than any of the summer months.

Fingers crossed we see at least a few days of warm sunny dry weather, preferably around the spring bank holiday in late May - for me perhaps the best time of year overall, always a positive feeling around late May. What a shame it is exam time for younger people, many will remember days of revising outside! and sitting in exam halls when the sun was shining outside. Under sunshine the Lake District is stunning in May.

I have a sophisticated new model which I call the Craig Minus Three and after many complex calculations it comes out at 12.0.

Then I took a peek at the GFS and adjusted that to 12.4 C.

The 12z GFS would have us at about 9.7C by the 8th, so 1.0C below the 81-10 average and 0.3C below the 61-90 average.
