Looks good, but I don't expect it to carry on right through to winter. October is still too early for lasting snow. All it takes is one of those pesky deep south westerlies to put us back to square one lol.. But non the less, Bring on the Snow!

for those wanting forecasts this link gives the main 2, MIWIS (ex colleague) and UK Met, you will also find several web cams not just Cairngorm but the other ski areas also. Well worth saving.

The locations where the most persistent patches occur have extensive plateau areas above providing a big fetch, so if it's cold enough for the snow to drift off these areas and still accumulate then sufficient snow can build up in October to form the first lasting snow of the new winter season. Obviously it will be some time before we know whether the first significant snow falls turnout to be lasting snow or not.

Potentially 4-6 inches accumulating on the tops in the West with significant drifting. Might just have to have a crack at getting some October turns in on Meall a' Bhuriidh at Glencoe! Will be watching webcams and radar closely tomorrow.... snow dance please!

In 1976 lasting snow came to the Cairngorms in the second week of September thus saving the last remaining patch/es [can't remember if it was just the Sphinx patch that survived] after the scorchio Summer. This is the earliest recorded I think. Last year was late though over 20 patches survived. It was into December before they were all buried again.

Did a little checking on lasting snow. Usually arrives in October, sometimes into November and on a couple of occasions December. Only the one September but early October not unusual. Often arrives in the high Cairngorms a week or two before the Nevis range.

A dusting on the higher hills as far South as Perthshire yesterday morning. Temps on the rise from today so won't last I'm afraid.

Snow that had survived on a Glen Coe Munro for the longest time in living memory has melted away.

From the Guardian.

T

his year looks to be a good year for Scottish chionophiles (snow loving organisms). Close to forty patches of snow, tucked into gullies and huddled under crags in the Scottish mountains, have survived the summer. Although these ragged fragments of hard-packed snow might seem small and insignificant, they provide an important ecological niche. Mosses, lichens and liverworts thrive underneath the snowy blanket, benefiting from the stable temperature maintained underneath the snow and the lack of competition from flowering plants. And when the snow starts to melt there is a burst of plant growth at the fringes, providing rich insect and seed pickings for snow buntings.  http://www.theguardian.com/news/2015/nov/08/snow-patches-highlands-moss-lichen-liverwort

Winds peaked at 97 mph across Aonach Mor yesterday with the freezing levels hovering around the summits. Forecast is for Storm-force winds and Snow down to 4/500m with the freezing levels up and down over the next week bringing freeze thaw conditions.

Snow was lying down to 100 mtrs asl in Highland Perthshire this morning so I imagine it would be the same further North. Lasting snow for the higher peaks perhaps where there is drifting though Sunday's heavy rain and milder temps will probably melt the general cover.
