March 1915 was an interesting month. The start of the month began with a polar maritime airmass that brought heavy thundery wintry showers across the South.

There was a pleasant spell just before mid month with temperatures getting into the teens

Crieff: 16.1C on the 12th

Alnwick Castle: 16.7C on the 13th

There was a dramatic change in weather when a developing low dragged very cold air across central and northern areas

This brought gales and drifting snow especially to the Peak District, Pennines and southern Uplands. 5 inches of snow at Macclesfield with 5ft drifts. Sheep farmers suffered badly and railway communications were disrupted.

Conditions eased somewhat but snow showers and frosts continued during the last week
