I am all set and ready to chase now on what looks like being the first proper convective day of the season. I am hoping that more storms can develop a bit further north.

First couple of strikes in the Midlands now so things starting to get going for you.

Some of the cells across the SW really starting to gather pace now.

Hi

Much risk for the Alfreton area do you think today?

Some showers starting to develop over North Wales and there's quite a bit of towering cumulus going up here in Manchester.

I would say there is a chance. So far the action is all to the south but showers are now showing signs of building elsewhere. The best chance is south and east of us though.

I am now sat near the M1 debating where to go.

That storm NW of London is a peach...looks stunning on radar and nice amount of sferics to boot!

Green eyed monster looming...

Edit - the storm about the thump St Albans is the most active storm in Europe by a country mile...that doesn't happen too often in an average year :D

The St albans storm is rushing through though. I imagine 5 mins it would be over and heading off into the distance.

At least this makes me feel better about missing it :-)

Blitzortung sitting at 459 strikes for the UK so far today...expecting that to sit over a 1,000 by the end of today at this rate...not bad for an isolated t'storm sort of day :D

EDIT - Make that 497

Last half hour, 7 maybe 8 rumbles heard, you know, the slow, deep, rumble that echos and echos and then crescendos before the harder you hear, it dissipates to nothing, a couple of squally winds swept up the street while 2 , 5/6 minute downpours with swirling low speed winds. No hail or lightning seen, would approximate the storms to be 15-20 miles south south east, near Lutterworth, Rugby, Market Harborough way.. although the blitz has the lightning further north, which it couldn't be or it would have been overhead!!!!

Sun back out now... Sky quiet..

Potentially the storm south of Cambridge has split with a right moving storm to the south. This particular storm may have some tornado potential.

Cell South of Cambridge has split, the second portion to the south approaching Great Dunmow looked like it had a distinct hook echo and is right moving from the north cluster. Looks like a supercell on radar. Anyone have a visual?

Exactly what I was about to post!

Indeed...exactly why I popped back into the forum.

Even using rudimentary radar, both the storms appear to have some form of rotational element. The very basic MetO radar shows the northern cell with a traditional supercell hook appearance (like a times new roman comma). The more scientific NetW radar makes the southern cell look like a spiral galaxy (albeit anticyclonic)

Blitzortung now at 862...not sure how accurate that is, despite how active the cells have been today.

The weather is doing its utmost to not be interesting. Jet black sky to the west and east with torrential rain showing in both direction but a narrow gap has formed and it has my name on it. Need that stuff to the southwest to intensify fast!

Nice looking anvil over Essex way. Very much doubt my part of the world will see anything today.
