Hope this god awful rain goes soon. Now is a good time though. Should mean a pattern change by summer.

Interesting.  How does that work then?

Of course nothing set in stone. Could be another awful 2007-12 style one ahead but would be exceptional for this to last through June, July and August.

You seem to have become a coldie recently w09?

I think just a case of 'more often than not', no science behind it.

The Mays of 2003, 2006, 2013 and 2014 were all unsettled and often wet but went on to good summers.

The Mays of 2002, 2007 and 2012 were also unsettled and often wet but most certainly did not.

I'm not really bothered about some rain at the moment in fact in a way I am glad, I'm not too keen on very dry springs especially at the time nature may need water the most.

Having said that I did enjoy Aprils weather.

Hopefully some decent falls of rain to sustain lush growth which would also mean a hot/dry summer, should one occur, may have less negative impacts on water supplies and plant/crop growth, and nature in general

Anyone who thinks getting crappy weather now bodes well for the summer should remember what happened in 2012. Crappy weather from April right through the summer punctuated only by a fine week in late May and a couple of nice days in late July/early August. We got stuck in the worst possible rut for the time of year.

Not saying it's going to happen again, but don't assume that it won't!

Well if there's no science behind it, it's BS.

Not quite, just means it doesn't need too much reading into. What would be more important is to keep an eye on what heights are doing over the Greenland area.

I have to agree, sunnier than average, a little warmer than average and drier than average. A pretty decent spring overall with quite a variety of conditions. Though some thundery showers would be nice.

May at the moment has been difficult to pin down in terms of a trend. There has been consistency on the Iberia region being drier and warmer than average with the Azores high building strongly in this location. The question for the UK has been that there are troughs east and west of the UK and hence which one will dominate proceedings and hence whether we are warmer or cooler than average. The models tended to favour the cooler option slightly though the current output suggests the opposite with an increasing trend for a plume of very warm air to the UK early next week.

Really windy here today. Seems like this week of May is very similar to this week of last May which also had strong winds for a good four days straight with periods of rain and heavy showers.

Sunniest April on record for the UK with an average 212 hours of sunshine

Morpeth, Northumberland, saw the sunniest April for 110 years - with 265 hours of sunshine, almost double the average.

Already over 70% of the whole monthly average rain total has fallen here in this rotten May. I've had 68mm of rain since the 24th April  - which would be a high monthly total - and there's not been one completely dry day. Temperatures have been dire only reaching 10C twice. Apart from yesterday managing 16.7C it hasn't reached 9C this month :cold:

This is a disgusting spell of weather to have to endure at the time of year the weather should be at it's best. So bad is this spell of relentless unsettled weather that the rainfall deficit from the first 7 weeks of spring has been completely cancelled out and by the end of today the seasonal total will be running above average.

It certainly seems to be following the pattern of 1906 when the sunniest April on record was followed by, what was at the time, the wettest May on record until being surpassed by 1969 which currently holds the record.

I wasn't referring to spring as a whole, just the current weather.

Highest here so far was 18.7 on the 23rd April.
I don't think we'll see 20C this month on current output.

At least some warmth to be had in the short term which should enable some places to reach 20c. Wont prevent this May from being a disappointment however.
