COLDEST POINT ON THE SURFACE OF THE EARTH

I wonder if a temperaute of -100C might be discovered following a still dry and unusually cold spell in winter in some part of Antarctica- perhaps on the flats of Dome Argus in East Antarctica at over 4,000 metres above sea level:  The temperatures discovered by satellite between Dome A and Dome F (by satellite) are 4C colder than the -89C recorded at Vostok in July 1983!!

 

The scientists recording the data point out this was rrecorded on the surface of the high Ice Sheet (ground temperatures are usually rather below air temperatures on clear still winter nights), but they estimate that because of the duration of still intensely cold spells that air temperatures would have fallen to within a couple of degrees of this temperature (i.e. -91C).

 I think the British Government should help finance the setting up of a Weather Station there so that temperatures could be recorded thoroughly.  The air there is extremely dry, cold and rarefield at that altitude over Antarctica.  One can only speculate as to what temperatures might be recorded- average January (summer) temp of -45C and an average of -75C in winter.  Scientists manning the station would need to wear space-suits before going outside to stop vital organs freeying solid in minutes (even in summer)!!  Folk in lowland Britain struggle to cope with temperatures below -5C.

Gosh!!! These are terribly low temperatures you are talking about. Huge question mark in my view in terms of survival even if a weather station is set up in that part of the world.
