Hi Guys,

wasnt sure where to post this, so thought I would just put it here.

I'm heading down to a little holiday home near Nice on Friday and staying there for two weeks.

Unfortunately we are driving there and back (which sucks in a minibus without air-con) but last time, on the way home, we passed right underneath a developing supercell in North France (I have the pics somewhere but can't find them at the moment) - it was mental, never seen structure like that except for pictures from the states, classic UFO shape to it.

I'm hoping to at least catch some after-dark lightning photography while i'm down there as usually, there is at least a couple of distant lightshows.

Any weather experts care to give their opinion on my chances of anything thundery for the next two weeks down there?

I will update this thread with pictures and reports if I manage to catch anything:)

Thank you:) had some decent distant lightning last night but I kid you not, as soon as I set my camera up for my wonderful first long exposure of lightning, it stopped:(

Chances for tonight? Looking decidedly soupy (the sky)

I'm beginning to think the weather has a personal vendetta against me.

Sod all here in the south of France (which is lovely obviously) while the UK and Hampshire (which never gets storms) is getting an absolute battering. I made it my mission to get a lightning photograph this year and after last night, every idiot on my Facebook with a camera phone has managed to get one:/ depressed doesn't cut it

Severe weather to affect western France

A spell of severe weather is expected to affect parts of France overnight and through Wednesday morning as an area of low pressure makes its way in from the Bay of Biscay.

Yes, at this rate, there won't be much left for the prune shakers to harvest.

Evolution provided:This very unusual depression for the season will bring from the second part of the night heavy rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds. In the northern part of the area in orange vigilance is the rain-flood parameter that will be predominant with accumulations of 40-60 mm within 12 hours of the Charentes Cher.On coastal is the wind that is most violent, with frequent gusts over 100 km / h in the Charente Maritime in the Basque Country setting. On the other departments in orange alert storms quickly circulate from west to east. They will occasionally be very violent (rain, wind, hail and possible).

The cumulative effect of all the storms and frontal rain, July/August to date, is the wettest in many years.

That is quite a trend since 2000.

Machine translated text with graph.

Since the beginning of July, France has been an overall exceptionally watered. In July, many monthly rainfall records were beaten, both in terms of totals that number of rainy days over many areas, especially in Alsace, Auvergne, Rhone-Alpes and Franche-Comté. Overlapping readings on the hexagon during the first ten days of August are, too, remarkable.

As of August 10, the cumulative rainfall since July 1, are almost two times higher than normal. * It's 55 years since the period 1 July-10 August was not as moist.

The Languedoc region of Southern France has seen some extreme weather this September 2014. Extracts from the blogs I follow on Weather Underground:

Incredible Rainstorm in Southern France
Torrential rainfall Tuesday through Thursday morning (September 16-18) in the Languedoc Region of southern France has resulted in flooding that has killed at least four people with two others still missing. The rainfall rates during the storm were phenomenal. A possible new all-time 2-hour rainfall record for France of 180 mm (7.09â€) was measured at Saint-Gervais-sur-Mare (Herault District) between 10 p.m. and midnight on September 16th, surpassing the previous record rainfall for a two-hour period of 178.4 mm (7.02â€) at Solenzara on October 26, 1979.

Another Record Rainfall in Southern France
It is hard to believe that another rainstorm of equal intensity to that which I blogged about just 11 days ago has again struck the Languedoc Region of Southern France. This time the focus of the storm was centered over the city of Montpellier, Herault District, near the Mediterranean Coast. Montpellier, a city of some 240,000, was deluged with an all-time 24-hour record 299 mm (11.77â€) of rainfall between 8 a.m September 29th and 8 a.m. (local time) September 30th. This is the equivalent of almost four times the average monthly precipitation for September in the city.
