Shocking afternoon yesterday, and another dreich start to the day today, but at least the weekend is looking good.

5.7C here, The wind and patchy cloud should keep frost away tonight, but tomorrow need to watch anything tender outside as it will widely be frosty.

Crap since Tuesday (Tuesday was seriously crap), but blue sky this evening, and pretty chilly - even the gentle breeze (oh Mandy, where are you  ) cuts through. As Ravelin wrote, lets just have some sun, even if it's cold.

Almost a few light wintry showers showing up to NE across the Firth in the setting sun. post-2744-0-13705500-1398977952_thumb.jpNot a strong enough flow to give a few better cloud photos.

Spot the deliberate miss in the spring barley which was caused by a  faulty low seed sensor. It has been resown!!!

Cattle out today full time, great no more feeding and bedding till September.

Temperature dropping  this evening from a maximum of 9c at 5.00 pm   to currently 4.5c

Started off the day here with a temp of -1.1C at 7:15am and a patchy frost on the cars and grass (at least the bits not in the sun). A fair bit of broken cloud around now but started off with virtually none.

NL, answer me a question please. On my drive home last night I noticed one of the fields just outside the village, of what was almost certainly grass, being rollered. Definitely being rollered as the tractor was still there pulling large twin concrete rollers behind it. Looked very pretty what with it's 'football pitch' stripes but what's the benefit of going to that effort? I've lived on the edge of the countryside most of my life but I can't remember ever seeing that before.

There are several reasons for rolling grass in the spring. The primary one is to push down stones and level the ground in  preparation for cutting later with a mower which would be damaged by stones or uneven areas and nowadays these self propelled forage harvesters which chop the grass into 1 inch lenghth  especially as they cost up to half a million pounds new and you don"t want any stone damage hold ups as grass is only at its best digestibility for about 10 days .

Also grass  as it mostly roots near the surface of the soil also benefits from compressing the soil near its roots especially after a frosty winter where soil heave/ expansion has seperated the soil and roots(not this last winter!!) It helps also  to flatten some mole hills where soil contamination can be a problem in silage setting up the wrong type of fermentation which can make livestock ill.

Disappointingly cloudy start to the day - was expecting sunshine as per the forecast. Been three chilly (sub 10c maxes) days so hopefully some sun and a little warmth before the day is out.

Hello There,

I normally post on the SE/EA regional thread, but would appreciate your advice. On Monday my wife and I travelling up to near Loch Lomond for a five day coach holiday. What is the weather likely to be up until close of play Friday. The wife is not sure what she needs to pack. wll it be thick coats and rainwear or shorts and flip flops or both? Looking at the BBC 5 day forecast was not very helpful.

Many thanks

Kind Regards

Dave

Unsettled and rather chilly ,sums it up. Maybe some short lived sunny spells, but also some cold rain. Yuck ,sums it up really! I wanted to go camping to Mid Wales next week, but unfortunately going to have to cancel that idea, due to some rather miserable weather... :wallbash:  :nonono:  :nonono:

Just been past several campsites around Loch Ness, busy weekend with kayaking, cycling etc. Plenty of hardier folks than me & thee out under canvas!

Typical.

A brief light snow shower in Newcastle as May arrives!

A very light covering nonetheless.

Doesn't look too bad a week coming up for the NE temperatures by day should be in the mid teens with some decent sunny spells on most days overnights will be cloudy with most of our rain coming during this time so no chance of any frosts

Yes, I was surprised as to how mild it was today - our northerly incursion just fizzled to not much at all - there were a couple of air frosts further north but not here as far as I've been able to find out.

First potatoes are poking their noses above ground - an indication of warm soil I guess as they've only been in 2 weeks. Also we seem to have far more set fruit on trees this year - I have told the cats to look out for Bullfinches as I know they're increasing in numbers in these parts.

Hazy sunshine in Darlo at the moment but rain isn't due till this evening which in turn will clear to leave a sunny day tomorrow (probably sunnier than today unless this high level cloud shifts) although some scattered showers may develop during the afternoon another warm one tomorrow especially in the sunshine
