Our weather certainly has certainly got into a wet dry wet cycle it seems. After the driest 24 month period on record for England and Wales between March 2010 and April 2012 we have endured a very wet 24 month period the taps being turned on in April 2012 - how distant do those BBC reports in March 2012 now seem talking about how dry the aquifers were... I know I shouldn't say this but an equilibrium always occurs, wouldn't be surprised to see the start of another 24 month dry spell about to occur after all this rain..

It feels like we go from one extreme to another nowadays..

We have been warned about the potential for extremes to become relatively normal!

But after this winter it will take one hell of a dry spell to cause any kind of concern...hose pipe ban this summer anyone?

Nothing unusual in the fact that we have wet and dry cycles, it is the intensity in particular the wet cycles at the moment that have been unusual. Was March 2010-March 2012 that dry? I'm sure April 1995-April 1997 was even drier.

Sunny Sheffield now up to 91.6mm for the month.

Is this intensity unusual though? What about the other top five years.?

With the very wet spell we had since 2012 we are due for another dry spell.  We haven't had a very dry summer nationwide to the level of 1976. 1984 or 1995 yet this century.  I do think we are due one now.  We had so many years were the summers have been very wet or record wet that it is time for a very dry one now.

BBC news yesterday said we had the driest 24 month period March 2010- March 2012 which I too found quite startling - I thought Apr 95-Apr97 was still the driest 24 month period. But if you cast mind back to March 2012 groundwater levels were exceptionally low and there were major concerns for the summer ahead. What a turnaround in April 2012!

324mm this month after 52mm since yesterday. I can't believe how much rain we've had this winter. I look at the numbers and think "that can't be right" but that's what's in the raingauge. 1,112mm this winter, in about 9 weeks. I know we're in a very wet spot but that is silly.

The two nearest PWS to me on Wunderground have recorded 288mm and 292mm this month so sounds about right. Wettest February ever looks likely.

Yes it was a dry period bar a hiccups in November 2010 here which recorded 122mm of rain also Feb 2011 with 93mm and December 2011 which recorded 110mm. If it wasn't for Feb and December 2011 2011 would have been our driest year on record.

Indeed. Second wettest season behind Autumn 2000 is very much up for grabs though. That's quite remarkable really.

It looks very likely that this Winter could move into the top 5 wettest seasons, breaking up the Autumnal dominance at the top; only 1.2mm more than winter 1914-15 surpasses Autumn 1935.

The overall top place looks safe for the foreseeable - Autumn 2000 looks to be in a league of its own.

I'd bet on 2nd place in the wettest seasons, should get 30mm over the next 11 days. Autumn 2000 is a long shot but wouldn't rule it out if we get a big rainfall event or two - possible with the current forecast setup though yes that's unlikely to fall.

A bit drier this month but still the wettest February for many years. Currently at 121mm, 2014 stands at 403mm, quite exceptional for here.

On a side note, worth having gander at this: http://notalotofpeopleknowthat.wordpress.com/2014/02/15/southern-england-much-wetter-in-192930/

What's the deal with that? Are we being fed false statistics this winter?
