Rainfall Statistics, 2014

Recommended Posts

A bit drier this month but still the wettest February for many years. Currently at 121mm, 2014 stands at 403mm, quite exceptional for here.On a side note, worth having gander at this: http://notalotofpeopleknowthat.wordpress.com/2014/02/15/southern-england-much-wetter-in-192930/What's the deal with that? Are we being fed false statistics this winter?

Not sure what that article is getting at, the winter period being referred to as Oct-Jan? What are the false statistics we're being fed?

Well we've had so many quotes now, it's ridiculous. Wettest for 250 years, 1910, 1914, 1852 quoted, individual stations quoted etc.. I don't like how they come out with certain bits of information before all the data is in either. Take for instance, 1st of February, that's when the claims of wettest January for 250 years had come in, but that was one station, not a region. As a region, up until the same date, this winter wasn't even in the top 20.

All these claims of wettest this and wettest that need to be surpressed until the winter is over and all the data is in, then ONE statistic can be released, eg: 5th wettest since 1764 or whatever.

It was indeed and perhaps here from what I can see in the rainfall archive. Oct 1929 to Jan 1930 having 1048mm , although with 710mm in just 10 weeks this spell could be said to be wetter locally.

Its there in black and white above - wettest Winter of the past 250 years achieved in the next few days, and as Bobby points out likely to be the second wettest season behind Autumn 2000.

To be clear then, looking at Met Office areal rainfall statistics since 1910:

January was the wettest across England at 158.2mm ahead of 156.9mm in 1948.

January was the wettest across SE/Central S England at 207.1mm ahead of 158.2mm in 1988.

January was the wettest across SW England and S Wales at 247.8mm ahead of 244.3mm in 1960.

January was the wettest across the Midlands at 150.7mm ahead of 147.4mm in 1948.

It was the second wettest across England and Wales.

Limping towards 100mm here now 96.6mm. No chance of any records being broken here unless we get a couple of T storms to boost things up a lot.

From BBC Weather's twitter account

Met Office provisional stats show that this has been the UK's wettest winter on record in the national series going back to 1910

There we have it folks.

This winter (so far) has seen 486.8mm of rain falling, beating the previous record set in 1995. #UKwettestwinter

It also shows that it hasn't been exceptionally wet in this part of the world - certainly wet, but nowhere near a record breaker, and definitely nowhere near as wet as autumn 2000.

We're now on 40.0mm for February and 145.8mm for the winter. Both are around 92% of the 1981-2010 average.

1977 was quite a wet one here too PIT with 90.9mm, not a patch on 1966 though which was 121.9mm and the wettest on record.

I think Reading University has recorded the wettest winter on record.  That was about the 18th I think.  They were only around 5 mm of the wettest season on record.  I think they have had that by now.  I wonder want the latest figures are for there. I wouldn't be surprised if there was anoucement on that in the next couple of days.

Latest data up-to the 23rd for Darlo has us slightly above average now

46mm of rain has fallen with the average 43.5mm another 4 days of February so I estimate a final figure of between 55mm and 65mm

Total for the year so far is 128mm the average to the end of February is 97.8mm a significantly drier than average March would bring us back closer to average for the opening 3 months
