Tropical Depression 13E has formed about 140 miles south of Zihuatanejo, Mexico. The depression has winds of 30kts, and is characterised by expansive convection slowly consolidating around a broad LLCC. 13E is forecast to move north-northwest into a weakness in the ridging over Mexico and make landfall in about 36hrs time. This gives 13E time to become a mid-strong tropical storm prior to landfall.

The depression has become Tropical Storm Manuel, with winds of 45kts. Banding features are impressive, but the LLCC is still a little broad. Manuel should strengthen a little more prior to landfall tomorrow. The combined affects of Manuel and TS Ingrid in the Alantic's Bay of Campeche are going to provide a very wet few days for large swathes of Mexico.

Manuel almost became a hurricane, has winds have increased to 60kts. However, the storm has run out of time to strengthen as it is making landfall on the coast of Mexico. Quick weakening over the mountains is expected as Manuel drifts northwest. Flooding rains will likely to continue to be a problem for several days.

Tropical Storm Manuel swept onto Mexico's Pacific coast Sunday while Hurricane Ingrid swirled offshore on the other side of the country, as heavy rains and landslides caused at least 21 deaths and led authorities to evacuate thousands. Stormy conditions led some communities in affected states to cancel Independence Day celebrations planned for Sunday and Monday. The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Manuel began to weaken as soon as it made landfall near the port of Manzanillo during the afternoon, but remained a threat to produce flash floods and mudslides. It was predicted to dissipate by Monday.

In the southern coastal state of Guerrero, authorities said a landslide on the outskirts of Acapulco buried a house and killed six family members. Three people were swept to their deaths by a river, also on the edge of the resort city. A collapsing wall killed one person in the city. Elsewhere in Guerrero, six people died when their pickup truck skidded on a rain-swept highway in the mountains, and landslides killed two more people. The rains caused some rivers to overflow, damaging hundreds of homes and disrupting communications for several hours.

Manuel had maximum sustained winds of about 40 mph and was moving to the northwest at 9 mph late Sunday afternoon. Its center was about 35 miles northwest of Manzanillo. Rains from Ingrid caused landslides that killed three people in the central state of Puebla, and a woman died when a landslide buried her house in Hidalgo state. In the southern state of Oaxaca, which was affected by both storms, authorities said a child died after being swept away by a swollen river and a teenager was killed by a landslide.

The hurricane center said Ingrid, the second hurricane of the Atlantic storm season, could reach the Mexican mainland by Monday morning.

Manuel was expected to dump 10 to 15 inches of rain over parts of Guerrero and Michoacan state, with maximums of 25 inches possible in some isolated areas. Authorities said those rains would present an especially dangerous threat in mountains, where flash floods and mudslides were possible. Ingrid also was expected to dump very heavy rains. It had maximum sustained winds of 75 mph and was centered about 125 miles east-northeast of the port city of Tampico as it moved northwest at 3 mph. A hurricane warning was in effect from Cabo Rojo to La Pesca. In Tamaulipas state to the north, where Ingrid was expected to come ashore, the government said in a statement that Independence Day festivities were cancelled in the cities of Tampico, Madero and Altamira. The Sept. 15 and 16 celebrations commemorate Mexico's battle of independence from Spain.

Officials in the Gulf state of Veracruz began evacuating coastal residents Friday night, and civil protection authorities said more than 6,600 people had been moved to shelters or the homes of family and friends. More than 1,000 homes in Veracruz state had been affected by the storm to varying degrees, and 20 highways and 12 bridges had damage, the state's civil protection authority said. A bridge collapsed near the northern Veracruz city of Misantla on Friday, cutting off the area from the state capital, Xalapa. A week ago, 13 people died in the state when a landslide buried their homes in heavy rains spawned by Tropical Depression Fernand. Officials in Tamaulipas state said 700 people had been evacuated from coastal communities.

Manuel has dissipated over Mexico. However, the remains are expected to veer westwards back over water, where there is a chance of regeneration.

The remains of Manuel moved off the coast of Mexico and quickly regenerated. Since, Manuel moved north, east of Baja California, and quickly strengthened into a 65kt cat 1 hurricane. At this intensity, Manuel has made a second landfall on Mexico. The hurricane should weaken quickly as it moves inland once more.

Following the deaths from the first landfall at tropical storm intensity, there is bound to be some more at this landfall at hurricane intensity. Manuel has proven to be quite a costly hurricane in terms of money and life.

Mexico storms: Hurricane Manuel upgraded and near coast

US meteorologists say Tropical Storm Manuel, which has battered the south-west of Mexico, has gathered strength and is now a category one hurricane. Hurricane Manuel is now approaching north-western Mexico and threatens more destruction, the US National Hurricane Centre said. The tropical storms Ingrid and Manuel killed 80 people earlier this week. Now 58 people are reported missing after a landslide buried a village in the south-west of the country.

US experts say Hurricane Manuel is sustaining winds of 120km/h (75mph) and moving towards the coast.

'Very powerful landslide'

President Enrique Pena Nieto said that 58 people were missing after the landslide in the village of La Pintada in Guerrero state. "It doesn't look good, based on the photos we have in our possession," said Mexican Interior Minister Miguel Angel Osorio Chong, saying it was a "very powerful" landslide. "Up to this point, we do not have any [confirmed] dead in the landslide," he added.

Tens of thousands of tourists, cut off by landslides caused by Manuel, are still being transported out of the Mexican resort of Acapulco. More than 2,000 tourists have been airlifted from the Air Base Seven military facility north of the resort. Since the weekend, passengers have been stranded in hotels and at Acapulco's international airport, where water flooded the terminal.

Manuel was almost immediately followed by Hurricane Ingrid, causing widespread devastation in the east of the country. It was the first time since 1958 that two powerful storms hit Mexico within 24 hours. Main roads out of Acapulco have been blocked by landslips, leaving tourists and local residents stranded in the city and along Mexico's west coast. There are fears that remote hillside communities may be particularly affected.

In the east, Hurricane Ingrid was downgraded to a tropical storm shortly before it made landfall on Monday near the town of La Pesca. More than 20,000 people have since been evacuated in the state of Veracruz. Mexicans are now hoping for a break in the weather to give them a chance to regroup and allow rescuers to operate more freely, the BBC's Will Grant in Mexico City reports. But there seems to be no let-up in the rain and powerful winds for the time being, our correspondent adds.

It's much further up the coast. Manuel's track map will help (it made landfall in southwest Mexico as a tropical storm, dissipated, then regenerated back over water and made landfall as a hurricane in northwest Mexico)

Manuel's circulation has dissipated, and therefore the last advisory has been issued. Rains should slowly ease from the west over the next day or two.
