Tropical Storm Man-Yi

After a week long lull in West Pacific activity, Tropical Storm Man-Yi has formed well south of Japan. The 35kt tropical storm is a broad storm with possibly multiple LLCC's struggling to consolidate. As shear is low and waters are warm, Man-Yi should at least slowly intensify as the broad storm slowly tightens. Man-Yi will move west along the south side of a ridge before a trough breaks down the ridge and recurves Man-Yi northeastwards towards eastern Japan. Man-Yi is expected to peak at minimal typhoon intensity on approach to Japan.

Man-yi was upgraded to a Tropical Storm early Friday  morning in between the Ogasawara islands of Japan and northern Mariana Islands. The confidence in the forecast track today has also grown. Over the past 48hrs we have been debating on two possible scenarios, one a recurving storm the other it stalling out near Kyushu and drifting west.

Today it looks like the quick recurving of this storm as it gets picked up by a deep trough out of Mongolia will be the cast. This trough is a rather potent one and is being forced south by a intense migratory high that is event causing below freezing temperatures across Mongolia and North East China.  This trough will act as a fish hook on Man-yi pulling it quickly north along the pacific coast of Honshu.  A landfall is still possible south of Tokyo though.  If one was to occur at this time it would seem most likely to be around the Honto Pennisula or Chiba Prefecture during the morning hours on Monday. I would say just prior to the morning rush hour but thankfully this storm will be skirting the coast on a Japanese Holiday. Many business will be closed any ways ahead of the storm.

Farther inland away from the coastlines heavy rainfall and severe weather is also expected. So the center line with the storm should be taking with a grain of salt at this time.  The upper level trough that is pulling Man-yi north will also kick up a vast amount of heavy rainfall and severe weather across the Kanto and Tohoku areas on Sunday night through Monday Morning. Flooding will be a major risk farther inland but also the threats of Tornados as warm moist area from the tropics combines with strong upper level winds and cool air aloft out of China.

By Monday afternoon the weather will dramatically improve for much of Japan as the storm races north. A strong North Westerly wind will also usher in cooler air for most of the country. At this time the storm remains rather exposed and with a very broad circulation. This means the wind field will be stretched out over a broad area and everyone along the pacific coast of Japan should watch this very closely.

High waves are also expected with this storm. The Ogasawara islands will likely see up to 5m and on the right front quadrant of Man-yi as it loops north 5m and possibly high will be likely. Residents in Okinawa will feel little impact from this storm given this scenario unfolding. Yet by next week a new storm looks like it will be developing and pushing south of the islands providing gust winds and high waves.

A weak LPA over Luzon is being indirectly enhanced by Man-yi as well triggering heavy rainfall across the Philippines today.  Expect these conditions to persist through the weekend and if we see a new Tropical System next week south of Okinawa moving towards Taiwan we could expect a large enhancment of the monsoon across the Philippines. Just like the track of Man-yi we have been watching for the past week. There is a lot of coulds and ifs in that forecast. Stay tuned and continue to watch Westpacwx For more information.

A very large system, and this is not working in it's favour. Winds are 45kts now, and JTWC are forecasting a peak of 60kts prior to landfall in Japan.

Man-Yi has consolidated and is now a 60kt tropical storm. There is a chance Man-Yi could become a typhoon prior to landfall in Japan later tonight. Winds and rains are already speading inland, and the worst of the conditions are expected soon.

Typhoon Man-yi hits Japan raising fears about Fukushima nuclear plant

Typhoon Man-yi hits Japan raising fears about Fukushima nuclear plant

Workers at the Fukushima nuclear power plant have braced for a powerful incoming typhoon. Japan is struggling and failing to keep radiation leaks from the facility, crippled by the 2011 quake and tsunami, under control. Typhoon Man-Yi hit southern Japan on Monday morning, bringing heavy rains and strong winds and sparking fears that it might further deteriorate the situation at Fukushima.

Workers at the site are using large weights to try and prevent cranes used to move debris from toppling over from the wind, reports Japanese broadcaster NHK. They also attached ropes to external piping and pumps, which are used to pump cooling water to and from the reactors. Staff members have increased patrols ahead of the storm to make sure that radiation-contaminated water doesn’t overflow from storage tanks. At least one overflow has already been discovered.

The typhoon has been increasing in size and strength as it traveled over the Pacific, with wind speeds rising to as much as 162kph.

Man-Yi is the 18th typhoon to hit Japan this season and is one of the strongest so far, leading officials to issue warnings of possible floods and landslides to citizens in different parts of the country. In three prefectures - Kyoto, Fukui and Shiga - the national Meteorological Agency forecaster issued highest level emergency alert. Railways in central Japan have suspended services in response to the typhoon’s arrival. About 800,000 residential buildings were without electricity in western and central Japan.

Mmm, the article generally has covered but there definitely has not been 18 typhoon landfalls on Japan this year and Man-Yi was never a typhoon officially.

Man-Yi has become extratropical as it crosses Japan, and the last advisory has been issued.
