This is just tragic news. I wouldn't have though that Tim was a risk taker. In fact his his last tweet just prior to the storm urged caution:

Storms now initiating south of Watonga along triple point. Dangerous day ahead for OK--stay weather savvy!

That northward turn of the El Reno tornado and then path down the I40 was unexpected and seems to have caught many chasers out. I would consider avoiding chasing around OKC wherever possible in future.

A great loss to the chasing and research teams of America. He was one of the most Illustrious and always ahead of the game researchers. Thanks for all your hard work. RIP.

RIP. :(

It just shows that no matter how great your knowledge, storm chasing is an inherently risky venture, even if experience can greatly mitigate. Part of the thrill I guess.

Very sad and maybe a reflection on how storm chasing is going. There are lots of people doing good things out there, studying to try to improve safety and warnings of which Tim and crew were one.

More and more people trying to get up close and personal with a tornado (me included).

Looking at the pic below, there could have been a lot more. The red dots are stormchasers. Pic from Weatherspace.

As things stand it appears to be the chasers that save lives by bringing info to the areas about to be impacted. As such we have not only lost these guys but their loss from the arena puts more lives at risk.

Any death is sad but those of life savers more so.....

I notice the news hasn't broken on any US website yet (presumably due to the hour). Still can't stop thinking about it and probably won't for a while to come!

Matty , I chased this storm with NW and part of the reason the chasers were so close together was because there was simply nowhere to go due to the gridlocked traffic and rotations & winds in the storm. Although some chasers clearly acted irresponsibly, most were simply just trying to escape the situation in the same way we were and made similar decisions on the limited options available

Very sad news, I'm surprised that Tim even tried to chase this in a built up area as he was very 'safety' minded, just goes to show that tornado chasing can be a very dangerous game even to those who know what they're doing.

Isn't this the first time in over 40 years that storm chasers have been killed by a tornado?

It's all the more shocking that it was one of the very best, such sad news.

If there is any good to come from this, I think it should put an end to trying to chase tornadoes through cities. It doesn't seem worth it.

I remember being stuck in traffic in Fort Worth with a supercell heading towards us in 2009, there was no real danger, it wasn't tornadic and still quite far away, but I got a sense of feeling a bit trapped, there was nowhere to go.

I'm still angry at the advice given out on some news stations, they put more traffic on the road by telling people to drive south and saying they could still outrun it, when it was only a matter of minutes away.

RIP Tim Samaras, his son Paul and friend Carl Young.

Sadly, this has been confirmed by Jim Samaras, Tim's brother.  Tragic news for all involved, and our thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of Tim and Paul Samaras and Carl Young.
