Four hard frosts in a row, however this one seems to be the last.

-6.3c the lowest temperature of the spell, and winter as a whole.. However we reached -6.1c on the 14th, fell below -5c on the 15th, and of course that -6.3c yesterday morning.

Not as cold, but still a chill out there with the temperature at -5.1c currently.

Clear and cold overnight but turning partly cloudy by sunrise. We did however manage a fourth consecutive air frost with a min temp of -1.2C.

It is currently 2.2C and 85% humidity and becoming rather cloudy.

The veil of high cloud from the Atlantic is extending over Cleadon following a bright frosty start. The temperature dropped to -3.9C last night- the last four nights were remarkable for consistency with minima of -4.0, -3.3, -4.0 and -3.9. Currently -0.3C with the frost slowly going, and less warm than this time yesterday, though I'm not expecting a frost tonight as this anticyclone retreats away eastwards.

This anticyclonic spell has reminded me quite a bit of the epic one on the 8th-20th February 2008, with some comparably amazing sunsets, though maxima have been rather lower due to the weaker sun at this time of year- in many ways I'm quite sad to see the back end of it.

Its been a similar yes, but strangely the February 2008 spell was much colder here. I think a lot of it is to do with the location of the anticylclone rather than the strength of the sunshine, especially as this spell has seen hardly any wind so there has been no onshore breeze effects either.

Min/Max temps in Feb 2008:

16th: 4.4C / -1.1C

17th: 4.4C / -2.7C

18th: 3.9C / -4.1C

19th: 1.3C / -3.5C

20th: 3.5C / -1.6C

and in this spell:

13th: 6.6C / 0.4C

14th: 4.1C / -2.0C

15th: 5.2C / -3.3C

16th 5.5C / -1.7C

17th: Min -1.2C (so far)

Still a good spell though and sadly the only real wintry part of winter so far.

Very surprisingly it's still 1.1C under cloudy skies for the first time in days ( :( )

A low of -1.3C on the station, which means an adjusted minimum value of -2.3C last night. Coldest since the night before.

February 2008 colder here for night time temperatures mostly as daytime temperatures were quite high, a good spell of cold weather with a stunning hard rime frost on the 19th..

Today is the first very wintry feeling day of the winter, by that I am describing frost remaining in places under leaden skies, the ground being frozen and a temperature of 1.9c after -3.6c minimum.

Such a shame in many ways that it has to turn milder by this evening.

The advancing high cloud has developed some large holes since about 11am, so the bright hazy frosty spell lives on for another day at Cleadon, with a current temperature of 2.9C and patches of cirrostratus and cirrocumulus scattered about.

Its been a similar yes, but strangely the February 2008 spell was much colder here. I think a lot of it is to do with the location of the anticylclone rather than the strength of the sunshine, especially as this spell has seen hardly any wind so there has been no onshore breeze effects either.

...

There do seem to be rather odd localised differences that we get during these anticyclonic spells. Normally Cleadon comes out with a similar or slightly higher mean temperature to "CET-land" during these sunny anticyclonic winter spells due to its coastal proximity, but during this spell it has consistently been colder by about two or three degrees. I imagine that it must be factors like the precise positioning of the high, frost cover, cloud cover etc. which make the difference, but sometimes it is quite hard to explain.

The first half of the February 2008 anticyclonic spell was certainly very different synoptically with the high positioned such that a lot of warm air came up from the south (I imagine that this was primarily responsible for the higher maxima then), while the second half of it was rather more similar to the current spell. I think the slight increase in sun strength in February does make for a slightly higher diurnal range, though there was indeed a brief incursion of warmer cloudier conditions from the SE in the very middle of that spell.

I was wrong earlier, it's been sunny for over an hour and, after peaking at 2.3c, the temperature is dropping again at 1.7c so providing

the sky stays clear a frost is likely quite quickly - perhaps more of a hoar frost given the increasingly moist airmass.
