I understand Aboyne recorded the magic -10 degrees in the early hours, he actual figure being -10.5 degrees, thus making it the coldest night of the season so far. Nothing exceptional, but its good to see such temps after the relentness mild weather of recent weeks. Doubt temps will get as low tonight especially over scotland thanks to a slight breeze and cloud moving into western parts. Coldest conditions probably reserved for central england and the south midlands and possibly parts of Yorkshire , mins of -7 quite likely in frost prone spots.

I'd be interested to see a list of yearly mins recorded. I have a list for the years 1939 - 1993 but only for England. Does anyone know what the min for england so far this winter has been?

Years with high mins include 1988, 1989 and 1990 (-10.4, -10.3 and -9.0 respectively), others include 1983 (-10.2), 1975 (-10.1), 1974 (-8.4) and 1949 (-9.4), but suspect we are only at about -7 degrees so far. I suspect winter 97/98 and 99/00 failed to deliver anything lower than -10 degrees, and possibly winter 07/08 - not sure how low temps were in mid feb 08 under the anticyclone, the very mild winter of 06/07 may have just scraped a -10 degrees in the midlands under the deep snow cover in Feb around the 7th/8th - the only cold spell of the whole winter.
