Chase day 3 saw our 3rd day on the trot of action in Arizona. Today I targeted North of the Mogollan Rim up towards the Flagstaff area. Part of my reasoning was due to what happened yesterday with the Haboob / Dust-Storm that affected the Central Desert and had put a lot of Dust and Haze up into the Atmosphere inhibiting convection between Phoenix and Tucson. So followed the RUC Model today which had newer data than the NAM & GFS.

After heading north and climbing to 7,000ft above sea level it was refreshing to see Pine Forests and temperatures in the mid 70's in the target area. We got onto some nice Storms over the mountains near Flagstaff, one of them prompted a flash flood warning, Storms then lost intensity from the North as they rained out on each other so kept dropping South to where Storms were still quite severe as they were tapping into the hotter air further South. This enabled us to go to Sedona and the famous Sedona Red Rocks (A Mini Grand Canyon) The plan was to try and get some Cg Lightning at Dusk time (730pm) with the Rocks in the background, unfortunately that Storm impacted at 630pm and light was just not right, Craig got a beauty hitting one of the Mesa's which he will upload tomorrow.

Our last shot at Night time lightning would be further South along I-17 At a Rest Stop that overlooked some nice Mountains I noted on the way up. Everything was going to plan and we were 1/4 Mile away from the Rest Stop when disaster struck and we encountered a Fatal Road Crash on the Road, it delayed us on the road from 7pm until 830pm whilst the Air Ambulance landed on the road to take the fatality away and the Police to do their investigations, we were only about 6 cars back from where the Wrecked cars were, all the time the Storm raged about 10 miles to our South West over the Mountains with perfect Lighting. Some of the guys did get some shots whilst we were waiting but not the end of the day we were hoping for.

Finally got back to the furnace of Phoenix at 10pm with temperatures at 100f again and with clear skies (Thankfully) as it looks like the breeze today has dispersed the Dust Clouds. 2 More very busy days coming up

Just posted on the general thread, have arrived in southern Utah as planned (Kanab near AZ border) and heading for Bryce Canyon today. Can see ACC off in your general direction on southeast horizon here. Stay safe and hydrate (beer does not count) that's what the Las Vegas airport shuttle guy told us -- we would have killed for some air movement on Thursday but there is quite a meso-scale outflow wind from the A/C hotel lobbies to the Strip.

On this day (Friday 19th) we got into position for scenery and weather tour by driving from Las Vegas northeast to St George Utah (in the southwest corner of Utah) and then east to Kanab UT which is very close to the Arizona border and about 50 miles north of the western end of the Grand Canyon. The road passes through parts of northern Arizona. Scenery improves gradually from the rather drab brown desert around Las Vegas to more colourful and eroded country around northwest Arizona, then vintage western movie terrain around Kanab, which is the centre of the region where many western movies are filmed. A festival connected to that activity was underway on the weekend we were in town.

After getting settled into our motel, we took a short trip northwest of Kanab to Coral Pink Sand Dunes state park (UT) where large, rolling dunes of astounding pink-orange sand have been deposited by erosion from nearby ridges and the occasional very strong SSW winds that develop here during developing storms that tend to run across central UT and Colorado into the plains states. This has been going on with a few wetter periods (glacial mainly) for millions of years.

The pictures below show the dunes, looking south, towards the Grand Canyon where in one picture you can see the cirrus and some hint of the cloud tops in the main storm chase (our location is basically about 200 miles north-northwest of theirs).
