Daily Express: http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/369790/Snow-chaos-to-cripple-Britain-with-15c-weather-predicted

BRITAIN is braced for weeks of heavy snow set to trigger the worst whiteout for years and cause chaos across the country.

Temperatures are expected to plunge to -15C (5F) in exposed parts from the weekend – with up to five inches of snow possible.

Forecasters said the entire country faces a crippling big freeze which could last until the middle of February as winter finally arrives with a vengeance.

Why do the Tabloids always have to go and embarrass themselves?

Never stopped them before lol.

The express inparticulair has always embarrassed itself when it's came to weather events. Very often making the major events sound a lot worse than they actually are

No One In UK Safe As Big Chill Sets In

Icy winds from Russia are set to whip up a fortnight of wintry weather across the UK, with forecasters warning of snow in most parts of the country. The unseasonably mild start to the year is expected to give way to temperatures as low as minus 5C, caused by an area of high pressure developing over Scandinavia. Cold air moving in from the Baltic and western Russia will clash with milder air and Atlantic weather systems arriving from the west, with the UK directly underneath. Paul Gundersen, chief forecaster at the Met Office, said: "All parts of the UK will see cold weather setting in over the weekend. "We can expect sleet and snow showers to affect eastern areas at times, but with a battle developing between the cold air in the east and mild air pushing in from the west, no one should be surprised to see sleet or snow over the weekend and next week."

Sky News weather forecaster Isobel Lang it was "too early to give details on how much snow will fall and where. "This is complicated by the fact that we are in the zone between cold air to the east and milder air to the west and at times one will become more dominant than the other." A dusting of hill snow is expected in the north before snow showers reach southern and eastern areas this weekend. The Met Office said the wintry weather could last until around January 23 when the outlook is more uncertain. Ms Lang said: "As wet weather spreads east across England and Wales on Saturday, some snow is likely, especially over hills but perhaps down to low levels later as the front clears southeastern areas. "A chill east wind will feed in further snow showers to eastern Britain during Sunday, although western parts should be dry and bright. "A covering of snow is likely over higher ground but some may settle at low levels too. Temperatures on Sunday may only reach around 2C to 4C at best."

Snow chaos to cripple Britain with -15c weather predicted

BRITAIN is braced for weeks of heavy snow set to trigger the worst whiteout for years and cause chaos across the country. Temperatures are expected to plunge to -15C (5F) in exposed parts from the weekend – with up to five inches of snow possible. Forecasters said the entire country faces a crippling big freeze which could last until the middle of February as winter finally arrives with a vengeance. Last night, as gritter lorries took to roads nationwide, the Met Office said freezing air from Russia is primed to clash with moist air from the Atlantic, triggering snow from Sunday. It’s the same weather pattern responsible for the bitter 2009-10 winter, the coldest for 31 years when transport networks were crippled and planes grounded. Icy easterly winds will sweep across Britain with everywhere at risk of wintry showers from the weekend and “significant snowfall†over high ground in Wales and the North.

Forecaster Charlie Powell said: “By Sunday and into Monday we are seeing cold air drawn in from the North-east which is pushing against colder air from the Atlantic. It is going to turn much colder and will be quite frosty as early as Saturday. “There will be some snow over hilly regions of Wales and the North-east and some of that could be significant. The UK has become a battleground between these two weather systems, and depending on which one wins out will determine how much widespread snow we see.†Piers Corbyn, forecaster for WeatherAction, warned that a “catastrophic†Arctic blast could see “feet of snow†cause mayhem across the UK. He said that the whiteout is likely to be more severe than the big freeze of 2010. “Winter is going to really kick in from this weekend. Although this has been expected for weeks people need to prepare for how serious it could turn out to be,†he added. “It is going to turn increasingly chilly with very cold weather from Saturday.

This is what piers corbyn said today...

Extreme cold, blizzards and snow drifts "many feet deep" to bring chaos to England and Wales for at least three weeks - into early Feb

· WeatherAction forecast issued ahead of all others

This catastrophic forecast scenario was first issued in detail in mid-December by WeatherAction long range forecasters and is now starting to come true. "Other forecasters are just starting to agree with us three weeks late but they don’t realize how severe this is going to be", said Piers Corbyn, astrophysicist of WeratherAction.com

"Our solar-lunar based forecast predicted generally increasingly cold and very cold weather from around Sat 12th Jan for Britain and Ireland. Next, waves of major Arctic blasts and blizzards with many feet of drifting snow are likely in places from around 20th with another major blizzardy blast around the begining of February.

"England and Wales including the South are likely to get the deepest snow, while Scotland and Northern parts of Ireland will probably be very cold rather than very snowy. Some of the SouthWest of Britain and Ireland will probably get rain rather than snow at times.

· Sudden stratospheric warmings forecast breakthrough

"There will be fluctuations in the severity of this weather but our confidence in this general forecast is increased by our new breakthrough in predicting major sudden warmings of the polar stratosphere, which in a contradictory way drive blasts of very cold air south.

"Although there is something of a 'stratospheric warming' developing now 10 Jan", said Piers, "we expect more intense 'sudden stratospheric warmings' and related cold blasts around quite well defined dates to come. We are 85% sure of this general picture and further details of the weather and stratosphere forecasts can be found via our websitewww.weatheraction.com ".

WeatherAction expect snow amounts to be as bad or worse than the record-breaking December 2010 - which they also predicted.

"Dr Stephen Wild, snow-expert at Weathernet advises that previous significant snow blasts in the last 10 years before Dec 2010 in England and Wales were: begining Jan 2010, 8-9 Feb 2007, Feb 1996 and Jan 1993", said Piers.

"These extreme events are entirely driven by solar activity and lunar factors and nothing to do with changes in CO2 which have no effect whatsoever on weather or climate", he added.

We'll have to grit and bear it! Britain prepares for a two-week icy blast bringing flurries of snow across much of the country this weekend

The mild start to the year is set to come to an abrupt end this weekend as temperatures drop below zero at the start of a cold snap expected to last two weeks. The Arctic blast will bring snow and sleet in its wake, with the treacherous conditions lasting at least into the middle of next week. Councils have been preparing to deploy hundreds of gritters across Britain as workers scramble to ensure that the nation has sufficient supplies of salt to make the roads safe throughout the icy period. The Met Office has warned people all around the country to be wary of the cold weather amid fears the roads could ice over every night - and advises everyone to keep a close eye on the weather forecast. 'The cold weather is going to last a little while,' said Met Office forecaster Helen Chivers. 'It's turned colder this week and will stay cold into next week as well.'

She warned of 'widespread frost at night' for the foreseeable future, with motorists at particular risk from ice building up on the roads every night. Areas on the east coast are set to see 'heavy snow showers' from Saturday, while rain and snow will sweep southwards throughout the weekend - though the south west is likely to be sheltered from the worst of the conditions, with temperatures there generally staying above freezing. 'People should keep up-to-date with the forecast as it could change from day to day,' Ms Chivers added. The snow is currently expected to return on Monday and Tuesday, with frost and fog set to hang around throughout the remainder of next week. While forecasters are uncertain about the prospects for the remainder of the month, they do not believe the unseasonably warm weather Britain has enjoyed is likely to return any time soon, saying that 'colder, drier conditions' are more likely.

The poor conditions are the result of a high-pressure front from Scandinavia meeting low pressure coming from Spain and France. The dangers posed by the wintery weather was vividly illustrated today when a huge lorry drove into a ditch near Peterborough due to the thick fog coating the roads. Dan Williams, a spokesman for the Met Office, said all parts of the UK could be affected by snow from Saturday because of a change in the upper atmosphere known as a Sudden Stratospheric Warming. He said: 'It would be fair to say that nobody should be surprised to see sleet or snow over the weekend and into the next week. 'We have got warm air trying to push in from the west and colder air pushing from the east and north east and there is a bit of a war into which will gain supremacy over the UK.

I wonder how Piers explains the observation that, despite the early sun being cooler than it is today, the primordial Earth was hotter? But that's for another thread...In the Climate Area.

'We are ready if it snows', say councils

COUNCILS across the region say they are prepared for the worst, if predictions of a snowy start to next week come true. Weather forecasters expect the weekend to bring a more marked drop in the recent unseasonally mild temperatures, with fleets of gritters on standby. Tony Conlan, a forecaster from MeteoGroup UK, the weather division of the Press Association, warned of the possibility of “moderate to heavy snowfall†for the North-East and North Yorkshire on Monday (January 14). Mr Conlan said temperatures of up to 5C were expected for Friday and Saturday, falling closer to freezing as the weekend progresses. He said: “Saturday night looks as if it will be a cold and frosty night, with a chance of wintry showers. “Sunday looks similar, with some sunny spells through the afternoon. “Some snow may arrive later in the day, mainly for Northumberland and County Durham.

“Next week is going to be colder, with the potential for some snow at times. “Although it is difficult to predict in detail, Monday night looks the most likely time for a period of moderate or heavy snowfall.†Some forecasters have predicted a prolonged cold snap lasting several weeks and affecting much of the UK. Officials at two of the region’s biggest councils – Durham and North Yorkshire – have sought to reassure residents that they are prepared for severe weather. A spokesman for North Yorkshire County Council said: “We constantly monitor the weather conditions and as soon as we see road surface temperatures getting towards zero, we make arrangements. “Our gritters usually go out at 5am, but if it is going to be more severe, they will go out the previous night.†Meanwhile, Durham County Council this winter boosted its fleet of gritters with ten new vehicles.

A Darlington Borough Council spokeswoman added: “We understand from that there will probably be a chance of snow during the weekend. However, it is not expected to be particularly heavy.

“That said, our teams are on standby, as they always are at this time of year. We have plentiful supplies of salt and are prepared for more severe weather should it occur.†Meanwhile, the Institute for Advance Motoring has issued advice on driving in snowy and icy conditions. Nationwide alert for up to 8 inches of snow

BRITAIN is braced for a “deadly cocktail†of cold, snow and ice, prompting officials to issue a widespread weather health alert. Temperatures will plummet across the whole country from today with up to eight inches of snow likely by the middle of next week. Britain will become a “battleground†between two weather systems which threaten to deliver snow, ice and gales. Forecasters say freezing cold air and snow from the North Sea will batter the East coast while the South faces a snowy onslaught from the Atlantic. Councils across the UK are poised to mobilise gritters and snow ploughs as the extreme weather threatens chaos on the roads. The Met Office issued severe weather warnings for snow this weekend with a Level-2 cold weather alert warning the impending big freeze could present a health risk. It said the winter blast will arrive tomorrow bringing snowstorms, freezing temperatures and ice.

Forecaster Helen Chivers said: “It is going to turn much colder with eastern parts of the UK expecting the heaviest and most frequent snow – and that includes London. “From Saturday onwards we have the risk of snow over the rest of the country, with snowfall along the East coast likely to be pretty heavy at times. “Cold air from the North Sea will bring snow to the East, another band of mild air from the Atlantic will come into the South which will bring a mix of rain and snow when it meets the cold air. “A mix of snow, cold air and the risk of ice have given rise to the cold weather alert.†She added that overnight temperatures in the North could dip as low as -7C (19F) while the South could reach -3C. Age UK last night warned extreme cold kills thousands every year and urged people to look out for vulnerable friends and neighbours. The charity’s director general Michelle Mitchell said: “It’s vital that older people and their families take sensible precautions to protect themselves from the cold. “Steps such as closing the bedroom window at night, keeping room temperature at 21C at home during the day, and wrapping up well when outside, can literally save lives.†The Weather Channel forecast up to eight inches of snow in the Midlands next week.

Forecaster Leon Brown said: “Next mid-week, the battle zone between moist Atlantic weather and the easterly cold brings the threat of snowfalls across central Britain, with some forecast solutions giving 10 to 20cm [8in] of snow.†Jonathan Powell, forecaster for Vantage Weather Services, warned of weeks of snow, ice and “extreme biting coldâ€. He said temperatures could plunge as low as -15C with no let-up until the middle of next month. “A band of rain will meet freezing cold air from Friday leading to extremely heavy snowfall, with most places in the firing line,†he said.

Yesterday’s Daily Express stated the Met Office forecast -15C. This forecast was in fact made by an independent long-range forecaster.
