May 22nd Report

Captured 2 tornadoes, 2 and 5 miles south of Wakeeny today.

However the day was not without incident! After a somewhat frustrating day chasing Supercells that were a tad too high based I finally managed to get on to a very promising cell that was spinning like a top15 miles south of Collyer, KS – unfortunatly a FLAT tyre on the car put a fork into the chase – irritating that the cell then went on to produce a tornado near to Collyer.

Just when the day was almost done I intercepted a “tail end” storm just after dark South of Wakeeny. This cell then produced a cone tornado which I phoned into the NWS. Moments later the cell then produced a bowl tornado. I then elected to move East on I70 in order to keep up with the storm.

2 miles East of Wakeeny I was engulfed by extreme RFD – I can tell you that at the time I really thought the I was in Tornadic circulation and this was it !! – I was in a 4WD Jeep and I had to turn the car into the wind on the interstate to stop it blowing over – while doing so both windshield wipers turned inside out and debris smashed against the car. The next 5 minutes involved driving out of the RFD (blind with out wipers) until things calmed down. I have driven in hurricanes a lot and this was actually worse!

Pete (CH4) got both tornadoes as well as the extreame RFD on film.

I have never seen RFD Like that on I70 East Of Wakeeney, Rain curtains hit us and then we thought we were in the Circulation of the Tornado that was just South of Wakeeney, the guys cannot believe how we even drove though that, 80-100mph winds slamming the right hand side of the car with debris and Hail, Nick and Andy had to cover their faces and we have big dents in the Car.

Brilliant, look forward to the footage :)

Glad you all survived, wipers OK now? :)

Ok, don't know where to start! So much happened on the chase today! Anyway, first up, first funnel dropped and rotation of debris on fields was observed (not shown on this photo - but Paul and others have it):

Another tornado just down the road W/NW of near Hoxie, seen after we managed to pull ourselves out of the mud after all three of our cars got stuck:

... we tried to chase after the first tornado but got stuck in mud on a dirt road, then tried to chase the 2nd tornado above but were stopped by downed powerlines across the road with emergency services at scene:

Got lots of amazing youtube to upload, including deadly Bear's Cage lightning and severe RFD straightline winds sweeping across the I-70 with golf ball hail and visibility to the end of the bonnet!

post-24-1211526426_thumb.jpg - 1st Tornado have better footage on Video capture and whole process

post-24-1211526471_thumb.jpg - Had to contrast the Cone Tornado, but visually it was Ghostly White

post-24-1211526509_thumb.jpg - Rpoing out stage, note the circulation still on the ground!

So many things happened today and with a Moderate Risk tomorrow many things to come, also add to that Chris (Itv Cameraman) will use todays footage and Ian Cameron could be a Film Star next year :):)

What a night..! and another to come.. That white cone was screened live by Matt Grantham (i think)

and during his stream we saw a couple of SUV's flying by a one looked like yours then one of them

was seen crashin into a ditch..!! extremely hazzardous driving, Great photos as usual and that youve

finally captured those illusive tornadoes looking forward to seeing the vids and the chase again tonight.

It looks like the person driving was distracted slightly(!) by the tornado, didn't notice the slippery road till it was too late to take correcting action. Over correcting an admirable number of times before finally succumbing to Lady luck.

Amazing, looks like the impact at the end was only relatively slight in the ditch as all the swerving from side to side took the speed out of it. Good cameraman keeping most of that on

Now we have some time from the Rainbow chasing of 24th May, some pics from when was it, erm, oh yeah Thursday :)

post-24-1211680955_thumb.jpg - Classic Supercell Stage near to Garden City

post-24-1211680982_thumb.jpg - Driving under the HUUUGE Meso just before the Hoxie Tornado

post-24-1211681025_thumb.jpg - Dave absolutely Mud Ridden after the Tractor Saved Us

post-24-1211681079_thumb.jpg - What about that for a Storm, Amazing Colours!

This day started in Burlington and we saw 2 Tornadoes, some serious road problems with roads turning to Quicksand, the boys managed to get my car out by rocking it and pushing me fishtailing down the road, the tractor saved Daves car and Chris the Itv Cameramans car, we then had a Tornado bearing down on the guys stricken on the dirt road, this Cone Tornado destroyed a House in front of us and littered the road with Powerlines, another couple of Intercepts with rain wrapped Wedges before we ended the day in Hays, before we got to hays we encountered Hurricane Force RFD Winds along I70, With a rain wrapped Tornado in there somewhere near Wakeeney it felt like we were driving through a Thunderstorm in an Aeroplane, the car fell silent and they wondered how I could see off the end of the bonnet of the car, Golfball sized hailstones and debris were getting slammed against the side windows of the car, it still was not over as when the overnight storms came through the storm at 6am was the most incredible storm I have ever seen, the Cg Barrage was putting down Lightning in our car parking lot, I was so worried at one point that I thought a Bolt was going to come through the roof, Chris spent time in Afghanistan with the Marines last year (You may have seen the programme on tv) and he said he has never heard anything like it even from Mortar shells landing nearby fired from the Taliban!

These 2 chases have been the most incredible of my life and all of us have been left with mouths wide open, the footage from these 2 days will be shown on Tv next year and we have all signed Waiver forms for the programme. Watch out for it!

Brilliant Stuff Paul...It sounds as though you are having the time of your life mate.

Everything is going to seem a little tame when you return to Britain.

Great pictures by the way :)

The BBC have footage of the pig farm getting hit at the end of this impressive footage. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/7419140.stm

Very sad, it does look as though the worker and any pigs that were killed were killed quickly.

Amazingly there was no fatalities only minor injuries (cuts/bruises) to some of the eight workers at the pig farm,

although the tornado was quite powerful most of the pigs were uninjured too, earlier reports mention maybe a

very small number of pigs may have been killed. The only fatalities yesterday was a young couple in their car which

was blown 150 yrds off the highway in Pratt county and authorities are looking into the possibility of a camper who

is believed to have been struck by lightning in Osage County.
