Just on WhatsApp with my brother in Costa Rica… they had a 5.1 earthquake today.. and three aftershocks… https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us6000lh55/executive

Got back from 10 days in Costa Rica, to visit my brother, this Thursday just gone… we went to a restaurant by the sea where there was lots of dead coral… it was from a 7.7 earthquake in 1991 centred on the town he lives in now… they had a 1.5 metre sea floor uplift…

my travel curse continues 🙈🙈😂😂

It is clear from geological evidence that the split from Iceland to the Azores has happened before. The scripted drama of the Pangea breakup has Eurasia spreading while the Pacific compresses, which makes this split inevitable. The Iceland volcanoes are not super volcanoes, but like all volcanoes require residents to evacuate temporarily. This spate of quakes and crevasses is a result of the pulling apart of the N American Continent - the New Madrid Rupture.

The Mainland Portion of N America is bound to the Eurasian Plate to the East and North, but the Mainland of N America is also being pulled West and South during the New Madrid Rupture process, dropping onto Mexico. The SE Portion is being pulled East with Africa. Until the New Madrid Rupture completes, releasing any hold the SE Portion had upon the Mainland Portion in Canada, the border tug tearing Iceland apart will continue. Given the pending New Madrid Rupture, Iceland’s pain will soon end.

101THEEAGLE.COM

The week is off to a shaky start along the New Madrid Fault in Missouri. There's been a sudden uptick of quakes with 4 being reported in just a few hours time and nearly 20 over the past 7 days.

Two 7.0 earthquakes within a couple Of minutes of eachother in the same location and bigger 7.6mag quake yesterday.

Wouldn’t surprise me if this gets merged into one larger quake.

It’s interesting that this swarm quakes are a little deeper than usual at 30-50km down however maybe not surprising given the trench off the Philippines is the second deepest in the world at nearly 10.5km.

This was always the region I was expecting the next big 8.5+ quake from but it’s looks like this will have unloaded a lot of stress.

Taiwan has been struck by its most powerful earthquake in 25 years, which measured 7.4 in magnitude

Officials have confirmed at least four people have died while rescuers are pulling out people trapped in collapsed buildings

The epicentre is located about 18km (11 miles) south of Taiwan's Hualien city, according to the US Geological Survey

The remote, mountainous region of Hualien was rocked by huge landslides, causing damage which could take weeks to repair

Tremors were felt as far as the capital Taipei, with videos showing buildings shaking violently

The quake initially set off tsunami warnings on the island and neighbouring countries, some of which have since been retracted
