Please don't tell me you recognise that as the west-coast mainline and you were just hazarding an educated guess?

I saw a class 47 at Stafford recently. What's that all about?

Cumbria - embankment, electrified two-track railway. Yep it was an educated guess lol.

If you can get shots out of the new kit in low light conditions of that standard - you're onto a winner :D

(Although it is a wee bit blurred) *snigger*

Tripod?

Like some of you here, I use a Nikon D300 (upgrade from D70s) I have shot nearly 30,000 shots since December 2008! I have a wide angle zoom and 50-500mm zoom for wildlife.

For landscape I recommend graduated grey filters for sky to those new to DSLR photography. I use a two stop ( means it is two F stops slower for less exposure of the sky) I also have a less dark filter and a warm up (orange).

If you are rich the Lee filter system is for you, if you are not like me then the Cokin system is perfectly fine. You also need the filter holder and adapter ring for the thread size on the front of the lens that you will be using.

I am on Flickr and have a gallery on my own website. I am happy to answer any photography questions.. Don't forget the best tripod and tripod head you can afford, not the cheap crappy things sold by most camera shops for thirty quid!

Hi,

I use a Canon 350D with a range of lenses (mainly wideangle and macro) and a lowepro rucksack.

I also use my sony minidisk dvd camcorder and my Kodak (V1233) camera (HD vid recording).

Re the comment that Magapixles dont mean a better image, i totaly agree with that from my own experience over the years. Never buy for the MP size alone...

I picked up a Nikon D5000 to go with my D300 today - I was sick of doing my back in taking Macros of Wild Flowers, so the swivly screen with Liveview sold it to me. It'll be my specialist macro body.

Would be interested to see your Macro work!

I think my next purchase will be a macro slide, will stop all the back and forth of the camera or tripod business, also would love alittle light box.

All my macro work tends to be wild flowers Louby, so my D80 spent most of the time an inch from the dirt and my back was groaning - After much thought, the liveview/swivly LCD on the D5000 more than offset the lack of an internal focus motor drive, as I manual focus on Macro stuff anyway. The D300 does for the other wildlife/landscapes stuff anyway.

My wild flower stuff is on my flickr account, Louby.

Just had a quick scoot through and came across 'Lady orchid flower detail, Oxfordshire, 2009' Love it! simpley love it.

I have done a bit of floral macro which as you said kills the back, so I tend to use the live view on the canon or buy some flowers and take the pics at the table.

If you don't mind will have a look through all your work :)

I have a Canon T90 with various lenses, including an 100mm Macro, but I haven't used it for years. My everyday camera at the moment is a Pentax Optio 430RS, OK I suppose for point and shoot, but not like an SLR. I keep toying with the Idea of getting a digital SLR, but wouldn't know what to choose. I have read lots of reviews, but still as much in the dark.

If I do decide to buy I shall certainly seek help from you guys.

I now have a Canon 500D with a Sigma 17-70, 10-20 and a Canon 55-250, nothing too lavish, but all three are decent samples and serve my purposes

Also have a very old Manfrotto 055 CBPRO with a much newer Cullmann ballhead and that's about it apart from a Kata rucksack to carry it all in

Mainly landscape stuff for me with the odd building here and there

Cheers

Well, i have a 8.4 mega pixel samsung for main use, it dose the job (well in all) . Then i have a rc car camera that i mount in my built in roof rack so when i'm chaseing a storm, i can swich it on and it can record for up to 4 hours depending on the memory card, it is 12.3 mp as well , good as it is a big as a pen lid. (p.s the memory card goes on the bottom so it works as a stand). And just in case i'm going to work and see something amazing i have a 5.0 MP camera phone.

I changed from a Canon 350 D to a 500D this year, complete with standard 18-55mm lens. Also have a Sigma 10-200 wide angle, along with a SIGMA 50-200 and a Sigma 75-300c/w macro lens.

Tripod wise nothing famously good just a tripod for now.

Focus for me is filters, getting my Circ Polarizers and graduated filters sorted out.

Oh forgot also have a lightning trigger, very useful should the UK ever see a storm again!!

Have to admit I much prefer the 500D over the 350D, it's a really good piece of kit.

Then it's over to sorting out the video camera, so I can keep up with my mate Pat Carter, the Gloucester Guitar King in waiting :drinks:

Hi guys,

I have a Canon 350D, which I've owned for around 4 years. It came with a kit lens of 18-55 mm but I haven't added to the lens collection as yet. I still love the camera, but there are many great DSLR's that have entered the market that are far superior - for example, a much larger LCD screen to review shots straight after shooting.

I've just ordered a Panasonic Lumix DMC-F2 for compact convenience - I'm hoping that will serve me well. Purchasing at under £100 wasn't a bad move either. :whistling:

There are so many great shots in the galleries! Look forward to picking up some tips from you more experienced photgraphers out there (well in time for the start of my Storm Chase USA 2011 tour!)

I own a Canon 400D (just over 2 years now) the kit 18-55mm lens, a Canon 28-135mm Ultrasonic IS (which I'm very impressed with and which stays on the camera most of the time), a cheapo Canon 70-300mm USM which does the job but isn't great. All lenses have UV filters mainly for protection. Just been reading a good review of a Tamron 18-270mm lens which would make all of my current lenses obsolete!!

Also own an aging Sony P150 which is a great little camera for nights out and when trying to travel light and somewhere in the back of a cupboard I have an old film Canon AV1 dating back to around 1981.

Like others here I spent a long time trying to decide whether to go Canon or Nikon but in the end the Canon felt slightly more comfortable in my hands.

I bought a Fujifilm FinePix S1600 back in January and it hasen't let me down. :)Video recording is up to the standards and I enjoy videoing alot. I'm still learning all about it but I'm very impressed with what it is capable of .

It is a :

12 Megapixel camera with 3 inch LCD,15 x optical zoom and 28mm wide angle lens

Dual Image Stabilisation with up to ISO 6400.

Currently a Canon PowerShot A1100 IS, which is pretty reliable for taking photos of the weather although there can be exposure issues when taking photographs of very bright or contrasting skies. I tried out a Panasonic recently and found that its exposure was slightly better in those situations, but it had other disadvantages- the anti-shake mechanism wasn't as reliable for example.

I had some problems with lens errors in the earlier Canon cameras (known at the time as the infamous "E18" error) but the mechanisms on the newer Canons seem better- of course no camera's lens mechanism is foolproof.

Perhaps an ND filter might help?
