R-r-r-rr-r-rrrr-revision...

Well, it's that time of year again. My finals begin on the 9th of May, and I have to do lots of revision, as I have been doing for the past few weeks. The problem with revision for exams is that there's no way of knowing whether you've really revised enough until you actually sit there in the exam. I have had a mix of revision and recreation time this Easter, whether I put too much emphasis on recreation remains to be seen, but I don't subscribe to the 6-hours-per-day revision routine. In my e

April 2005 Weather Summary

A very ordinary April on Tyneside, with the odd bit of sun, the odd bit of cloud, and the odd bit of rain.Overall, rainfall was above average due to a few excessively wet days (the 14th and 15th stick out), and sunshine was close to normal. As usual temperatures were above the long-term average but not excessively so.The events that stick out for me are a classic April day of sunshine and showers on the 6th, and the first snow in April since 2001 occurring on the 8th. Indeed, the last time we ha

March 2005 Weather Summary

This was definitely a month of two halves as far as temperatures were concerned. The first half of the month had a distinct northwest-southeast split, with the northwest having the lion's share of the sunshine and the southeast being cold and cloudy with wintry showers. Lancaster largely missed the snow again, but it did at least hold onto a good deal of sunshine. The 1st had some very heavy hail showers.Towards midmonth, and another northerly set in, producing some snow flurries on the 14th.

February 2005 Weather Summary

February 2005 was a month of two halves, although by weather type it was more like a month of three thirds. The first third was dry and mild throughout. A much-anticipated northerly fizzled out by the time of its anticipated arrival on the 6th, and there was a mix of dull dry days and sunny dry days. The middle third of the month featured a northerly which many of Net-weather's membership were pinning their hopes on, hoping for snow. Indeed, the northerly produced a remarkable amount of shower a

January 2005 Weather Summary

As promised, albeit somewhat overdue, I will be posting up my 2005 monthly weather summaries! The first third was mostly dry and cloudy while I was in Tyneside, with much mild dampness from the SW. The 1st was very exciting though, with some torrential rain at 5pm, and then some snow showers in the evening as the temperature fell from 5.3C to 2.2C in just five minutes. The last two thirds of the month were spent in Lancaster. There was a memorable gale on the day I came over, with much disruptio

Today's Messing Around

Well quite a busy time in 3rd year University, fiddling around with postgraduate applications and the like, but I still have some time to mess around on Net-weather, play Half-Life 2 and Doom 3, etc.My parents are coming up next weekend- should be good!My personal weather summary for January 2005 will be coming very soon, and also for a couple of the earlier months of 2004.Some people are already ramping up this weekend's cold snap. If it comes off it will probably be easily the biggest event o

Saturday Ramblings

It's the weekend- and not unusually for Lancaster, there was a spectacular sunset just five minutes ago! I have to say I've done rather well during this anticyclonic 'gloom' spell- there's been a decent amount of sunshine here in Lancaster, while in my home region of South Tyneside it's been pretty dismal, so I've heard.I finished my hydrology project yesterday- something of a relief, because hydrology is probably the aspect of Environmental Science I'm least interested in of all the aspects I'

Introduction, Nov/dec 2004

Hello everyone- I have decided to do my own Weather Almanac, which consists of my own personal summaries of the weather I experienced in those months, plus brief bits at the end on the weather that the country as a whole experienced.I will be starting with the latest months and working backwards (also updating subsequent months as they happen). If anyone wants to know what I remember of a month earlier back within the period 1993-2004, then by all means give a request and I'll do one for the mont

Why Am I Here?

I became interested in the weather at the age of about three or four, mainly observational based on looking at clouds and changing weather patterns. In 1993, I developed more of a general interest, relating wind directions to their characteristic weather, and also becoming interested in mists, fogs, atmospheric pollution and dust, and the 'fog effects' that rain, hail or snow can cause when falling on somewhere on the horizon. My meteorological interest particularly soared during 1995, a year with
