What do you think was the greatest year for sport, that is to say so many memorable sporting things happened in that year.
1977 seems to stick in my head. Red Rum wins his 3rd Grand National, Virginia Wade wins the Wimbledon women's singles final, England regain the Ashes 3-0 and Boycott scores his 100th century in first class against Australia at his home ground Headingley, there was the "duel in the sun" between Watson and Nicklaus for the Open title on the last day.

Greatest Year For Sport?

What You Don't Want To See During Summer....
17 May 2012 - 18:36
...or perhaps you do. An active cold front pushing southwards drawing very cool air for the time of the year from the north as happened during July 1993. It produced quite a temperature plunge. This heralded a period of below average temperatures that lasted right through to December in the south and to the end of the year in the north. Here are forecasts showing how it unfolded.
Who Should Light The Olympic Torch At The Opening Ceremony?
14 May 2012 - 06:30
Which Briton should have have the honour of lighting the Olympic torch at the opening ceremony?
Should it be a past Olympian? Memorably, Muhammad Ali lit the Olympic torch in 1996 Should it be one of the current athletes, like Cathy Freeman did at Sydney in 2000?
Steve Redgrave has to be the massive favourite, Chris Hoy is another name, Seb Coe or here's one that I will pull out of the hat, Roger Bannister, the first sub 4 minute miler who did appear at an Olympics game.
For the last lap in the stadium, Steve Ovett passes the torch to Seb Coe who then passes it to Kelly Holmes who then passes it to Steve Redgrave who then lights to the torch.
One definite no-no for me, David Beckham!!!! I will be fuming if he is involved in the stadium part of the procedures.

Early May 1995: 20+c Then A Week Later, Wintry Showers
02 May 2012 - 19:58
Not quite as spectacular as what was going to happen 2 years later but early May 1995 saw a heatwave one day and then a week later, wintry showers.
On the 5th and 6th May, the heatwave reached its peak with maxima as high as 28.6C at Cheltenham

Typically as approached the Bank Holiday Monday which was VE Day that year to celebrate the 50th annversary of the end of the war in Europe, the weather became cooler.

By the end of that week, it became even colder with night frosts and some places even reporting snow.
