Sanvu maintained a 65kt intensity over the last day as dry air plagued the system. However, an eye has become fully evident on satellite imagery and intensity has risen to 80kts. A little further strengthening is possible in the next 12hrs.

No, we have two other major hurricanes in May in the East Pacific; Hurricane Adolph in 2001 which was a cat 4 and Hurricane Alma in 2002, which was a cat 3. Bud has officially become the third May major hurricane in the East Pacific this morning, with intensity rising to 100kts, making him a cat 3. Weakening is beginning however, as in the last few hours, the eye has become cloud obscured and the central dense overcast is shrinking. This is likely a response to increasing shear and cooler waters. A landfall on the Mexican coast now appears likely as Bud's continued fast motion means the predicted turn away from the coast will happen to late to prevent landfall. Although Bud looks to be weakening now, he should still reach the coast as a hurricane, so hurricane warnings are in affect.

It's interestong to note that if Bud does become a cat 3 major hurricane, it will be only the 3rd to do so in May in The East Pacific.

Bud has strengthened to 95kts, making the hurricane a cat 2 on the SS Scale. Bud has a well defined eye and another 12hrs to strengthen. Cat 3 is looking much more likely now.

Bud has strengthened further to 75kts. I think Bud could make a run at major hurricane intensity (100kts), before weakening begins. It could well fall a little short, but the eye is becoming much better defined, and the convection looks more symmetrical. A tropical storm warning and a hurricane watch has been issued for parts of the coast of SW Mexico.
