'Unprecedented' 40,000 seabirds dead after year of storms

Britain's sea birds are under threat, experts have warned, after an "unprecedented" 40,000 were found to have died in this year's storms.

Three times the average number of guillemots were killed on Skomer Island, Wales, one of the country's most important havens for seabirds, as they struggled to find enough to eat in turbulent seas.

Professor Tim Birkhead, of the University of Sheffield’s Department of Animal and Plant Sciences, said that a "run of storms" and "high mortality" would mean seabird populations will start to decrease.

How did I know that 'climate change' would be secreted in there, somewhere? Knocks almost everything you post is like a subliminal message for such nonsense - which is a great shame because they are otherwise largely interesting.

Or, re phrased, how did I know that your post, LG, would be dismissive of and sarcastically sceptical about any link between the weather/climate and humanities actions...That too is a great shame.

How did you know I'd respond to that post - after all there's an awful lot of similar ones I could have chosen.

I recon a large number  were  cut in half by those stupid polluting wind turbines that now infest our land and seas.

More than likely. I rode past three of the buggers about 15 miles from here the other day and couldn't believe how colossal they are. Damn things would fetch jumbo jets down if they flew low enough.

And would 'wind turbines' not fall under the remit of man made change guys? Are they not another sign of our thirst for energy to drive our chosen life styles?

Windmills are bad because if jumbo jets decided to fly into them they'd hit them? Wow, you'd never guess that would you... Edited by Devonian

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
