August 1984 was an interesting month. It had warmer second half than first half for the CET.

First half: 16.3

Second half: 18.9

CET: 17.6

It was overall a dry, sunny, warm month.

I remember the heatwave during the second half of the month, it was hot and sunny.

I remember it well after a great july, sunny and very warm with little wind the whole month, only 1995  was any amount warmer with 1997 and 2003 just a fraction warmer. It was very dry in these parts after a dry year with very low resevoirs!

I said a few days back, how like 1989, summer 1984 is often glossed over when we talk about very good summers of recent decades. I think it is down to the fact that neither summers produced anything particularly special temperature wise compared to 1976, 1990, 1995, 2003 and 2006, however, they both produced lengthy spells of decent warm dry sunny weather. In Cumbria summer 1984 was very dry coming on the back of a dry spring, thanks to easterlies dominating, however, for east and se parts spring 1984 especially May was wet and cool, and the summer saw much more cloud.

I have pictures showing our local park with brown grass, only time this had happened since was August 1995.

Decent summers do seem to come in twos and threes...

Or memory fading 30 years is along while ago.

As for 2003-2006.

It seems like donkeys years since we had a particularly warm middle to late August period.  In the very hot August of 2003 it was the first half of the month, in 1997 it was from around the 6th to 24th, in 1995 it was the early to middle period and the heat tailed off later in the month.

Since 1983 I believe only Augusts in these years had a warmer second half than the first;

1983, 1984, 1985, 1987, 2005, 2008.

No August since 1984 has been notable for seeing a warm middle to latter half.  Prior to 1984 a similar pattern occurred in Augusts 1947 and 1955.  August 1976 started average to cool but turned warm in the middle to latter half.

We are long overdue an August that turns warm in the middle to latter part after a fairly average start to the month.

August 1995 delivered a warm middle to latter period, temperatures 20th-22nd were widely in the high 20's even here, however, the warmth did relent at the end of the month.

The Atlantic traditionally wakes up by the middle of August, early August on average is far more likely to deliver warmer drier weather than the middle and especially latter part of the month.

This August could end up being devoid of any 'warm spell' in the northern half of the country.

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
