Just a quick question. Is today's UV much stronger than it should be? In summer it takes me a couple of hours to even notice a burn, but today I've been sat out for 40 minutes and I've got sunburn already!!

What's going on?

It does seem very strong on the skin today- the sky is extremely clear in the NW with excellent air quality and low pollution today. I imagine there is nothing preventing the full impact of the sun today where the sky is clear.

We did experience higher than normal UV levels for the time of year the other day due to an ozone anomaly, according to the Met Office.

However, people do tend to get a little complacent with the sun at this time of year because it's not particularly warm. Sunlight at the moment is as strong as it would be in mid-August.

I believe UV is slightly higher in spring that it is at the corresponding time in late summer/early autumn as well- something to do with the earth's orbit? I'm no expert but I believe that the earth is closest to the sun during the Southern Hemisphere summer and is slightly closer during spring than the corresponding time in autumn.

I've been burned in late March myself, although that means I'm always careful in the sun.

Indeed could still be low ozone affecting things but as said the sky is crystal clear maximising the suns rays. Lovely day though and I've caught the sun nicely this week without burning :)

I sat out this afternoon with the intention of catching a bit of sun but not too much. On an unremarkable day temperature wise the sun really made a difference.

Indeed, a lot of people do tend to think that, I bet most people don't realise that you could potentially get sunburnt in the Arctic during the summer months.

Proper clean air today has helped with the effects of the sun aswell, stunning day today, no complaints from me!

The strength of the sun on April 18 is equivalent to the sun's strength on August 24, so we would be expecting the current UV levels to be similar to the very end of summer.

Yep spot on, people on here usually mention how August is the best summer month because the suns strength is at its lowest, I think the sun now is very pleasant unlike from mid May to late July.
