Geologic cycles act as a climate control, releasing and absorbing atmospheric carbon dioxide in a balance that helps keep the planet not too hot and not too cold 

Researchers from USC and Nanjing University in China have documented evidence suggesting that part of the reason that the Earth has become neither sweltering like Venus nor frigid like Mars lies with a built-in atmospheric carbon dioxide regulator – the geologic cycles that churn up the planet's rocky surface.

As I understand it the process of subduction, the plates being absorbed back into the earth's crust takes the CO2 with it but it is so slow and it takes about 1000 years to have an effect, so there is no point in the Global warming deniers banking on this - I don't think I will be around that long, though it does explain the 'Snowball Earth' and reasons for this ice to melt a bit better.

So what do you get if you mess with that geological balance by digging up the hidden reserves of CO2 and flooding the atmosphere with them?
