‘Unusual’ rainfall causes major flooding in Kruger National Park

HEAVY rains across northern parts of South Africa in the past week have caused major flooding in the Kruger National Park in Mpumalanga and Limpopo, where roads, camps and restaurants have been closed over the past two days.

 

On Thursday, the park, which is a major tourist attraction in South Africa, said four of its smaller camps — Shimuwini, Bateleur, Sirheni and Balule — were closed due to flooding. Also shut were nine main roads, all gravel roads in the south and the Crocodile Bridge Gate.

 

Although the Talamati and Biyamiti bush camps were inaccessible, the Kruger’s main camps were not yet affected. The Berg en Dal camp received 182mm of rainfall on March 3 and 4, while Skukuza measured 178mm and Biyamiti 100mm.
