Unfortunately, it looks like conditions will align tomorrow to create a risk of significant coastal flooding. We are seeing a combination forecast of high tides, strong winds and swollen rivers. A deep depression is forecast to be situated to the west of Scotland (950mb) by 0600Z hrs tomorrow morning with winds gusting upto 60-70mph over exposed coasts. This will lead to a storm surge with raised sea levels coinciding with the high tides. With another 20-30 mm of rain in addition to that on top of waterlogged and already flooded land and swollen rivers, conditions couldn't be more unfavourable.

 

 

The environment agency has over 400 alerts and warnings out with over 17 severe flood warnings in place already.

For those most at risk in the southwest and western exposed coasts it is one of those times to take precautions and keep a very close eye on the developing situation. I suspect that sea defences will be overtopped and that there will be a severe risk to property and even possibly a danger to life. Do take care all of those in the affected areas and do not take any unneccessary risks.

The greatest risk of coastal flooding is between 2-4hours either side of high tide. The greatest risk is from the high tide tomorrow morning.

The quay was flooded here last night, it will flood the causeway connecting us and the next village for sure! I'm heading down to Swanage tomorrow, to catch high tide, hopefully some good picture opportunities.

It's looking pretty grim for areas in the west and south for tomorrow - we're in a period of spring tides now until the 6th January, so alongside the coastal risk, there's also risks around tidal locking of watercourses if we see significant rainfall over the next three or four days.

Where water courses drain into the sea, they usually only drain water when the tide is going out, out or on the turn.  Very high tides mean that these water courses can't drain water for as long, so water tends to back up in them as it moves downstream. It's usually an issue in periods of very high rainfall or very high tides.  It often results in some rivers bursting their banks because there's nowhere else for the water to go.

Strange, all of the Wirral bar Woodside is only under a flood alert at the moment but the Welsh side of the Dee is under a severe flood warning (that's two levels up). Woodside itself has a flood warning (the intermediate level).

Not to question the integrity of the Environment Agency, but you may as well put West Kirby in the red if Woodside is.

So far it appears that the far west areas where the high tide has passed have escaped any significant flooding. Let's hope that continues as the high tide makes it around the country.

Can confirm that. Quite a few areas in Cornwall have experienced flooding but nothing as yet that can be termed significant, thank goodness.
