Interestingly on the BBC News website the storm surge coverage is way out in front in terms of the numbers reading it... that's also a very good point Cyclonic Happiness makes about the complete failure to mention how the storm has affected Europe. Hamburg in particular has taken a real hit.

It could be because it wasn't as bad as predicted and there is only a certain amount of times the same old info can be repeated. Bit like the mandela news the same reports will now be endlessly repeated over the coming days.

I put a complaint in as people needed live information what was happening. It shouldn't have been dropped and should have been the main story with Nelson 2nd on the list.

It seems we've been lucky although to some out there they won't feel it at the moment.

Minister says storm surge that claimed two lives and forced thousands to flee from their homes is not over yet.

On Friday morning the Environment Agency still had 25 severe flood warnings - issued when flooding poses a danger to life - in place, as well as 102 flood warnings and 54 flood alerts. Following a meeting of the government's Cobra emergency committee on Friday, Environment Secretary Owen Paterson warned: "There will still be exceptionally high tides today and tomorrow and I would ask everybody to pay very close attention to advice from the Environment Agency and also to follow instructions from the police, local government and the emergency services."

Police in Essex and Northumbria said the flood water was receding, while the Scottish Environment Protection Agency lifted all flood warnings this morning except one for the Eyemouth coastal area. Thousands of homes were evacuated after the largest North Sea surge since the disastrous floods of 1953 hit the north Norfolk coast early on Thursday evening and headed south the night. The Thames barrier faced the biggest tide since it opened in 1982 and was due to close again on Friday morning, after being shut overnight then reopened.

Jason Wakeford, a spokesman for the Environment Agency, said: "The worst effects were in darkness overnight so it is too soon to assess the overall picture but several thousand properties have been affected in the biggest coastal event of the last 60 years and the warnings we issued were in line with that risk. "Some 800,000 properties have been protected by the defences put in place in the last six decades and we have issued 120,000 warnings to individual properties. "It is quite clear from those numbers that events like this are hugely dangerous - the 1953 flood claimed thousands of lives so alerts and warnings are very important to prevent such a disaster happening again. "In places across the east coast sea levels were higher than in 1953. However, this time we had much better protection in place."

One man died on Thursday after he was struck by a falling tree in a park in Retford, Nottinghamshire, and a lorry driver was killed when his vehicle toppled on to a number of cars in West Lothian, Scotland. In Hemsby, Norfolk, five clifftop bungalows fell into the water as the high tide eroded the cliff below.

In these kind of situations local radio is the best place to tune into. Channels like news 24 and sky news Will never report on the minutest of detail in every town, village, hamlet. One of the must haves in a survival kit is a battery powered radio.

They, the 24 hr news programs, also seem to reduce news gathering after about 9 pm and just rely on regurgitating what's in the papers, even though the papers are printing what's been on the 24 hr news channels during the day !!!

I think this thread and Netwaether generally was a great source of national and local information!

For weather events we're probably ahead off broadcast weather forecasts as we're watching in near real time. Occasionally we do get over excited I once drove home and was surprised that I had driven through invisible snow. Somebody had been up the a few minutes before and posted that there was several inches when there was only a odd slight patch under the hedge.

Scarborough clean-up reveals considerable damage to defences will need urgent attention.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-york-north-yorkshire-25253954

I wonder if they have discovered that the hugh rocks they've put in the north bay have moved. There was a similar but far smaller idea at Hornsea which actually caused a marked acceleration of coastal erosion. However most of the rocks have gone and when you look at the size of them you understand the power of the sea. At the same now that the barrier is smaller the erosion has slowed.

Tidal Surge Clean Up Under Way

Some 1,400 properties were flooded across the country in coastal communities stretching from North Wales to Essex

The task of cleaning and repairing flood-damaged homes is under way after a tidal surge so powerful it swept some houses into the waves. The swollen sea flooded 1,400 properties across the country overnight on Thursday in coastal communities stretching from North Wales to Essex. It was the most serious tidal surge to hit Britain for more than 60 years, and the Environment Agency said high tides on Saturday could cause more flooding in areas already inundated with water.

But the number of flood warnings and alerts has been reduced with fewer than 50 now in place, and no severe flood warnings, which are issued when flooding poses a "significant threat to life". Susan Telford and Paul Citrine are still struggling to get through to their insurers after their home in Rhyl, north Wales, was left coated in mud once the waters receded. Ms Telford said: "It's just a waiting game now, I suppose, and a long clean up...but we're lucky. We've got our health and we've got each other and material things can be replaced."

At Hemsby in Norfolk some homes are gone for good. The sheer power of the sea swept three over the sandy cliff and others were left teetering precariously. Pub landlord Jonathan Thompson rallied his regulars to help save one family's belongings after he saw the cliff beginning to give way.  "It's heartbreaking to watch someone's entire life being swept into the sea never to be seen again," he said. The Environment Agency says 800,000 properties were protected thanks to both permanent and temporary flood defences. They helped prevent a disaster on the scale seen in 1953, when hundreds were killed.

But some barriers were breached as the tidal surge combined with high tides and strong winds. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) said two women, two young babies in pushchairs and a dog had been rescued after being hit by a large wave at Louisa Bay in Broadstairs, Kent. Thousands of homes in coastal areas were evacuated after officials warned that lives could be at risk. Hundreds of people were forced to spend the night camped out in emergency rest centres. The North Sea surge followed an Atlantic storm which brought severe gales of up to 80mph across Scotland and northern parts of England.

Some mountainous regions in Aberdeenshire and Inverness-shire reported speeds of around 140mph. One man died after he was struck by a falling tree in a park in Retford in Nottinghamshire, while a lorry driver was killed when his HGV toppled onto a number of cars in West Lothian. The adverse weather also caused chaos on the transport network, with rail services for Scotland and parts of the North of England suspended and number of flights disrupted.

note the loss of life due entirely to the flooding, thankfully after 60 years of increasing flood defences, better communications etc, noe were lost due to flooding.

Good job the storm hit before Nelson Mandella died otherwise there wouldn't have been any coverage or live information at all.
