A dusting (1 to 2cm) at resort level in Chatel last night (1200m) - looks like we missed out on a decent fall, but the mountains look wonderful today and the rooves are white. There is plenty of snow on the upper half of the mountain, though it does look like being a fairly mild weekend here. Chance of snow next Tues / Wed and then we may join in with the colder air that will be arriving in the UK.

Its a beautiful start to the day here in Chatel at 1200m. Photo taken a few minutes ago towards the Linga ski area. Upper runs have some good coverage in places, but hopefully this week we may see the runs filling in nicely down to resort level.

Yep, encouraging start to the Alpine season, though not quite as outstanding as some sectors of the ski press would have you believe! Very difficult to gauge intensity and distribution of snow this week but beginning in western Italian Alps tonight & tomorrow then other areas coming into play as the week progresses.

After the heavy snow that fell to low altitudes to our west yesterday (St. Etienne, Clermont etc) it is our turn this morning in Chablais as it has been snowing all morning (moderate to heavy) and we currently have about 12cm of lying snow on our postbox here at 1200m in Chatel. Current temp -1.7C.

hey got any web cams? I was interested in Chatel, I like the idea of it being a large ski resort but keeping it's traditional alpine look, although I'm also interested in Morzine area, Id love to see some pictures of the actual resort if you have any?

I have tons of photos of the Morzine area, from holiday back there in 2006 and from snowier days since. In the snow Morzine and indeed in the summer,it looks very picturesque, and has a wide apres ski, both without snow in winter, it doesn't look half as good. Being at 1000m on the western side of the Alps, lack of snow is definitely an issue in the resort itself. Of course its sister resort of Avoriaz at 1800m has much more snow, but is more of a man made resort with interesting architecture.

I have given the Alps section of the below report, full report available from http://www.snow-forecast.com/overviews/tips_full (Report courtesy of Ski Club of GB)

INTRODUCTION More heavy snow this week continues to make for one of the most impressive starts to a season in recent memory with storms hitting Switzerland and France.

AUSTRIA Consistent snowfall throughout the week has created excellent snow conditions at our featured Austrian resorts recently. The best conditions could be found at Kaunertal (0cm/211cm) and Pitztal (0cm/164cm) on Thursday 21st November. Both resorts received around 10cm overnight and sunny skis made for a great day of skiing and snowboarding Neustift (15cm/120cm) also had fresh snow on offer on Thursday and snow continued to fall during the day after a 10cm accumulation overnight Kirchberg (0cm/35cm) and Kitzbühel (0cm/35cm) are both due to start operations this weekend and experienced sunny weather on Thursday Although there has been no new snow since Friday 15th November.

FRANCE Val Thorens (90cm/100cm) is in great shape ahead of its opening day on Saturday 23rd November after a huge storm this week.35cm of fresh snow fell at the resort overnight on Thursday 21st November and heavy snowfall continued in the morning. On the other side of the Three Valleys Courchevel (25cm/82cm) will join Val Thorens in opening on Saturday and also benefited from around 30cm of new snow on Wednesday. Courchevel will offer free access to the lifts when it kicks off the season on Saturday while La Clusaz (10cm/70cm) is also set to open early this weekend Tignes (40cm/220cm) enjoyed a light dusting of snow on Wednesday 20th November but experienced heavy snowfall on Thursday which limited visibility across the resort.

SWITZERLAND Heavy snow continued to fall this week as more of our featured Swiss resorts prepare for opening day this weekend. The best conditions were on offer at Zermatt (10cm/240cm) which received a huge dump of around 40cm on the Matterhorn Glacier on Wednesday 20th November. Although the lifts were open on Thursday 21st November continued snow restricted visibility Saas Fee (15cm/260cm) also woke up to new snow on Thursday with 10cm falling over night but strong winds caused the closure of all lifts Andermatt (28cm/150cm) is preparing to open this weekend and benefited from a timely overnight snowfall of 25cm on Thursday. Crans Montana (0cm/70cm) is also opening early this weekend and had a light dusting of snow on Wednesday.

ITALY It has been a good week for snowfall in Italy with most of our open featured resorts receiving good snowfall Val Senales (20cm/280cm) received 10cm of fresh snow on Wednesday 20th November as did Passo Tonale (40cm/160cm). Although both resorts provided excellent skiing and snowboarding conditions the following day visibility was limited by cloud.Despite cloudy and foggy weather at Cervinia (0cm/150cm) on Thursday 21st November there were excellent snow conditions thanks to a 25cm accumulation on Tuesday 19th November.

ANDORRA None of our featured Andorran resorts are open yet for the winter season

GERMANY Garmisch (0cm/100cm) remains the only one of our featured German resorts currently open for skiing and snowboarding. There are three lifts open on the Zugspitze glacier.Although there has been no new snow since Friday 15th November there was brilliant sunny weather on Thursday 21st November and good skiing on-piste.

EUROPEAN WEATHER OUTLOOK Europe is expecting more consistent moderate snowfall as more resorts open their doors for the season this week. Switzerland should have a snowy few days before the sun returns early next week but heavy snow will hit ski areas again during the middle of the week.It is a similar story in Austria but less snow is expected in France which should receive light dustings over the weekend and warmer weather next week. The most snow however is expected to fall in Italy over the next week with almost 50cm predicted at some resorts including Cervinia.

Clearly there is more snow on the webcams this week, even down to lower levels, As seen the Tines and Wengen webcams. This ties in with the snow photos from others over the Alps.

oh I don't know, 15cm in the village itself with 25cm where they have artificially increased the depth is fine for this time of the season as far as my experience suggests for Wengen. It rarely shows the enormous depths that other alpine resorts have even those at similar altitude, even in the next valley Grindelwald at about 800ft maybe a 1000ft lower quite often has either the same or more than Wengen.

Synoptics

Sunday sees High Pressure over NW Europe and the UK, and on the High Pressure’s SE flank, East to North East winds over the Alps. For Monday and Tuesday the High Pressure sinks to be centred over the UK, butt again with East to North East winds over the Alps. High Pressure continues to dominate for the Alps for the middle part of the week, with variable winds, however by the weekend perhaps winds veering more to a NW direction.

850HPa Temps – The North East wind bringing colder air for the Alps for Monday to Wednesday but as the winds turn a bit more variable turning a bit milder form Thursday onwards.

Sunday -2c (N) to +2c (S)

Monday -7c to -10c (NE and generally) to -1c to -5c (SW)

Tuesday -7c to -10c (NE and generally) to -5c to -7c (SW)

Total agreement on the cool down, a rise in temps thereafter, which is slightly more pronounced in Bern.

Precipitation / Snowfall

post-213-0-39801600-1385304176_thumb.gif

Most precipitation is set to be over Austria this week and this heavily weighted towards the start of the week, with 25cm of snow possible down to as low as 1000m, with snow falling to lower levels towards midweek.

Overall

The cold weather for many resorts will freeze the existing base, and snow cannons will widely be in operation this week and that excludes the fresh snow likely in Austria especially, so snow conditions set to improve widely this week.

--------------------------

Next week the combined forecast will be on the Saturday. You may have noticed that the forecasts this year are tending to be over the weekend rather than on the Friday, and are more concentrated on the Alps this year. Over the weekend there is far more time for me to do the forecasts, I know that these are not suitable for people going on Saturday - Saturday holidays, so if you are going on on a holiday on a Saturday and would like an update sooner, please let me know in advance.

SNOW NEWS UPDATED 25 NOVEMBER 2013

INTRODUCTION Early season conditions continued to impress all across the Alps this weekend with Austria receiving plenty of new snow and more resorts opening for weekend skiing.

AUSTRIA There are excellent snow conditions at all our featured Austrian resorts after plenty of weekend snowfall.Skiers and snowboarders in Obertauern (70cm/90cm) woke up to around 40cm of fresh powder on Monday 25th November although the weather was mostly cloudy Kaprun (25cm/170cm) also experienced heavy snow this weekend with 30cm falling overnight on Monday but the resort also suffered from thick cloud and poor visibility. The best conditions were at Neustift (30cm/160cm) on Monday which received 30cm of fresh snow through the night. There was fantastic skiing across the resort under overcast skies. Solden (20cm/164cm) enjoyed a perfect ski day on Monday with 10cm of fresh snow on the ground and cold but bright, sunny weather. There was also snow this weekend at lower altitude resorts including Schladming (5cm/40cm) which received 10cm on Monday and opened up two more lifts. Kitzbuhel also made new terrain available after 10cm of fresh snow fell on Monday.

FRANCE Val Thorens (75cm/110cm) is now open every day following a successful opening weekend. The resort offered excellent skiing on piste on Monday 25th November under sunny skies Tignes (40cm/220cm) still has the strongest snow base of our featured French resorts although there has been no new snow since last week. On Monday there were good on-piste conditions but the snow was variable and tracked elsewhere La Clusaz (15cm/70cm), Alpe d'Huez (40cm/170cm) and Courchevel (45cm/105cm) all opened for bonus weekends on Saturday 23rd November. They are all expected to open for the season proper at the end of this week.

SWITZERLAND Andermatt (40cm/200cm) opened for a bonus weekend on Saturday 23rd November and conditions were boosted by a 5cm dusting the following day Crans Montana (10cm/50cm) also opened early on Saturday but both resorts are currently closed during the week. Some of the best conditions this weekend could be found on Glacier 3000 at Gstaad (0cm/220cm) and Les Diablerets (0cm/220cm) after a heavy storm last week. However, strong winds forced the closure of all lifts on Monday 25th November Saas Fee (22cm/295cm) now has the strongest snow base of all our featured resorts thanks to a dusting on Saturday. Nearby Zermatt (35cm/170cm) received 10cm of fresh snow on Sunday 24th November and provided excellent conditions on Monday thanks to brilliant sunny weather.

ITALY Following good recent snowfall Passo Tonale (70cm/200cm) opened up more terrain over the weekend and there are now five lifts in operation. Skiers and snowboarders were treated to brilliant snow conditions and sunny weather on Monday 25th November after 10cm fell the previous day Cortina (25cm/70cm) is now open thanks to a huge dump of 50cm on Thursday 21st November although there has been no new snow since.Elsewhere, Val Senales (25cm/280cm) had fantastic conditions on-piste on Monday but some lift operations were limited by strong winds.

ANDORRA Brilliant early-season conditions allowed Pas de la Casa (40cm/140cm) and Soldeu (40cm/100cm) to open for a bonus weekend on Saturday 23rd November. Skiers and snowboarders reveled in soft snow and sunny weather. All of our featured Andorran resorts are expected to open for the season proper next weekend and Pas de la Casa enjoyed 25cm of fresh snow on Monday 25th November.

GERMANY Garmisch (0cm/100cm) remains the only one of our featured German resorts currently open for skiing and snowboarding. There are three lifts open on the Zugspitze glacier. The glacier enjoyed a top up of 6cm on Sunday 24th November and there were excellent conditions the following day with clear, sunny skies and fresh snow on the slopes.

EUROPEAN WEATHER OUTLOOK In the Alps consistent early-season snowfall could subside for this week with most resorts in France expecting sunshine and warmer temperatures until the weekend. Switzerland and Austria will start the week with light snowfall but will also see increasing sunny weather as the weekend approaches.

Looks like a few places are opening early in the Portes Du Soleil this weekend as well - Chatel, possibly Les Gets (decision Thursday) and rumours of Avoriaz too.
