Weather station recommendations

Hi guys,

Some of you will have seen me floating around on the forums, especially the NW England regional thread, and am an avid fan of meteorology, but far from 'experienced' in any way shape or form in the area. I am looking at getting a weather station over the next 6 months or so, so I can record data from where I live, as I find weather data fascinating. I was wondering if any of you weather station fanatics could point me to a station that would allow me to collect data, but also learn new things about meteorology? ( if such a thing exists?!) I am planning on making a purchase over the next 6 months or so as funds are stretched at the moment.

Thanks in advance!

Darren

This isn't a 'good' station but works reasonably well and communicates with your computer by USB to store data long term (watch for that in budget ones)

You can use the free cumulus software with it if you want to put up a weather page or upload to Wunderground.

If you are 100% certain you want to do this in a semi-pro way then look at Davis.

Most who tinker with weather stations eventually get a Davis but it's a lot to layout then find you have problems at your site like neighbours complain or difficult to get a good position for the sensors.

So a cheaper one to start with is a sensible way to go for a year or two.

I know a few that have the http://www.maplin.co...recaster-682792 , I lost my davis a few years ago and got a cheap one from maplin, it did not have the usb  so I made my own charts. the guy a few doors down had a davis and the results of his to mine were not far out. his temp reading was always 0.2c lower than mine but the rain was spot on. I have just got the one in the link above and having a few problems with it right now due to wind (see other thread) but the temps on over the last few days have been spot on to the davis readings and the rain and pressure have been 100% spot on to his. so far I am impressed

by it for that and due to the price.

its no VP2 but well worth the money and right now its 59.99 new

The Maplin one is a clone of the same model I have - it has been working fine for a year or so and for the money you can't really go wrong.  My only criticism of it is the LCD display is hard to read - you have to bee looking at it almost straight on to read it.

Coupled with Cumulus its a very cheap way of getting your weather station online.

I looked at the Davis units, but just the USB interface was more expensive than the weather station I bought.

I went the Davis route, and was very happy with them! I found a device on Davis website that allows you to connect their sensors and any other weather sensors to this unit: http://www.controlbyweb.com/x320m/. It uploads the weather data straight to the web without a computer or usb, etc!

... I graph and log weather information over time and can monitor my station from anywhere I want because it's all accessible over the internet! Like I said, you can use it with Davis or any other weather sensors... Hope this helps if you haven't already decided.
