Ian Fergusson has posted this in the MOD, take note…..

It'll get cold: that is now unquestionable. But our briefing wisdom today from Exeter affords balanced perspective: "Don't go overboard (re snow / extreme cold etc) as yet. It is still winter, after all..."

In other words: high confidence on the trend now but a cautionary note on any public statements re eventual outcome. Nonetheless, make no mistake: all heading very much in the right direction for cold lovers.

Of course short waves existed back then, we just didn't have all these models to know when (non existent in reality) cold spells didn't happen, or to hyperventilate about crazy ECM charts at T+216 and T+240, and seem so surprised when they don't happen. We had mild winters back then and get cold winter spells occasionally now (December 2010 anyone)

I agree- I remember looking back through the recently-updated Wetterzentrale archive charts from the 1870s to 1940s and being surprised by how many times some sort of northerly or easterly nearly came off but was scuppered by shortwave activity and cyclogenesis around Iceland. Winters were generally colder and snowier on average back then but there were still a fair number that were generally mild and snow free- 1920/21 springs to mind for instance.

Oh dear, it's started. The doom and gloom is currently in the MOD.

I have just checked the MetO outlook for 20th January to 3rd February, and whilst they mention the possibility of below-average temps, they also refer to the North and East, not the South and West.

I am, therefore, no longer excited.nea.gif

I was planning to plough through the MOD at half-time. Should I not bother?

No dont bother - pathetic really. Reminds me of the House of Commons! LOL

Ian says yday to not take too much notice of output past a week because of volatility of the situ and the model masochists do exactly that!

And it's only 30 mins to go before the next instalment!

I love these particular uncertain model days - it's like watching your favourite soap with a few episodes in one same evening!

No, I'd leave them to it for now. Usual suspects plus a few who seem to have a bit of a grump on today............it's only the weather!

They all seem grumpy to me...especially Steve M. who is generally superb. It always fascinates me how emotive the chase for cold and snow is!!

No. Don't. It's not safe!

There is a lot of sniping and arguing going on, because the latest models don't show snowmageddon.

It doesn't seem to make any difference that Ian F has stressed several times that the models wll show wild swings whilst they get to grips with what is happening.

For the sake of your sanity.......DON'T GO THERE!wacko.png

Perhaps there ought to be an 'ignored members' leaderboard, with the weekly top 5 being banned for a while.

Then we could take bets each week to see who would be leading!

Oh Boy - I am looking forward to what the weather has to come over the next few weeks. Like others on here I was going to enter the lions den, but I have decided not to even bother, because it just gets up my nose how petty and argumentative people can get. I would not like to live next door to some of them if that is what their behaviour is like on a weather forum.

Anyway that said - lovely on here as always, and looking forward to the next episode in a while and i'm not going to have my hopes dashed from the otherside.

Its still a long way off, we all know its is quite certain but surely the cold is the first part of the mix to make snow. Even if it does rain that could very easily turn to snow in a blink of an eye if something suddenly changes, like it has done in the past. Like Aquastarmist has said "Game On".

There never were any guarantees that the SSW would defiantly result in snow for the UK, however it certainly looks as though things will cool down significantly during the next week.

The overall trend is becoming clearer and there is potential for snow in the second half of January and into February, FI seems to be from the 12th atm so we all just need to sit tight and hope for the best!

Ruddy hell, if the ECM verified we would be under snow this time next week near enough.

Goes to show the volatility of the NWP output currently.

Love has returned to the MOD!!!

I was just about to say the same thing - a very nice ECM run has calmed everyone down. They'll be kissing each other's bruises before we know it .........

It always baffles me why so many seemingly mature people let one model run influence their mood so much.

I'm just happy that the charts are looking up. Even if it all goes wrong, i would still prefer a shot at some cold. Endless weeks of rain is enough to drive anybody mad and of course the results have been catastrophic for some.

Cold and dry would be good, a sprinkling of snow would be great but 6" of the white stuff would be amazing!!!!
