Cold spell on the way! Early February 1999

Remember watching the BBC forecasts in the 90s hoping for them to predict a cold wintry spell was on the way and to see if the blue colours were heading our way?

I remember the early February 1999 cold spell. It had been a fairly uneventful winter up to then but along came another cold spell. We had a little bit of snow and a snow cover on the Monday morning of the

8th February 1999 but it was mostly cold and dry around here.

Peter Gibbs talks about a cold spell on the way: 3rd February 1999

The change begins: 4th February 1999

I remember looking forward to that northerly spell but thinking afterwards that it was rather overhyped. Snow fell and accumulated widely, but in many parts of the country it was just a dusting on the 8th/9th that subsequently melted in the sun, and it wasn't notably potent temperature-wise (the Central England Temperature dropped to around zero). On the other hand it was a very snowy spell near some north and east-facing coasts- Aberdeen had about a foot of snow, and at Lowestoft >50% snow cover was reported on 7 mornings.

Near the Tyne and Wear coast there were snow showers overnight 8th/9th and 9th/10th which gave about two inches early on the 9th and one inch early on the 10th, but the daytime weather was dry and sunny with maxima of 3 or 4C resulting in some trimming of the snow cover in the sun.

Remember this spell of weather vividly well as it had been a preety tame winter up until this point with little in the way of snow other than a shortlived northerly in early december and transient snow at times in early-mid Jan reserved mainly for high ground.

Away from coastal parts in the east it was a dry snowless affair. However, I was living in Newcastle at the time and working in Sunderland and remember a decent couple of inches from the spell which lasted a couple of days. I also remember visiting Middlesborough during the spell and travelling along the coastal train route seeing the snow falling right on the coast.

Despite it being a rather tame affair, it was sadly probably the snowiest spell in NE England inbetween early Jan 97 and late Dec 00, showing how woeful the winters of 97/98, 98/99 and 99/00 were for cold snowy weather.

I have some memory of the cold spell of early Feb 1999.

In my area London,Wembley,Middx. On the 8th of Feb we had rain which then was followed by sleet

and snow by evening time with the cold front moving southwards the snow setted but there was only

a covering as i recall.

In my log book it says from 9th to the 11th Feb it remained cold and sunny with overnight frosts

with Max temp mainly 4 to 5c and Min of -2c.

Gosh my post above is over 11 years old.. no need to repeat it..

And at this rate that event will look epic, going by what our winters have become and will only get milder!
