So how do you go about chasing storms then? Always really interested to see and hear how other people go about it.

Here's a quick shot taken from a recent test of the mobile live video streaming setup.

Cheers

Kev

I've done it for quite a while, but I just use my iPhone with 3G, my girlfriend usually navigates me and she also has an iPad which is better for using the radar. For filming I use the very professional approach of steering with one hand and filming with another Posted Image . Look's like you've got a nice kit!

Ps. Is that a Vectra?

Thanks buddy. Yeah it is my trusty vectra - great car for all manner of things including storm chasing. Made a few changes to the setup since that picture was taken including the installation of a HAM radio and a few other bits and pieces. I use an iPad as well when I am out - its quite handy to carry around and means the laptop can be left just for streaming live video.

I use my £5 pocket radio to detect lightning, have a look out of the loft window, if i see anything worth a better look i drive just out of town n see what happens .

I just wait and see whats forecast, or if it happens I drive out and try and chase, don't use anything technical, just eyes and ears

What data plans are you using, I would like to live stream but imagine it will cost me a small fortune!

I just used my sat nav for navigation, and regular stops in lay-bys to check the Netweather radar/forum on my smartphone.

I normally stop for filming/photography, but I have attempted it while driving before, although I wouldn't recommend it.

I reckon the most useful storm chasing tool in the chaser kit is an understanding of meteorology and the local geography.

Never stop learning about storms and how they develop and what type of synoptic scenarios are good for storms in your area.

I had a fantastic chase last summer on the S Warks, Northants Border, got some great piccies (on my flickr) and managed to shoot some good storm rain footage whilst driving the redoubtable Skoda Octavia around

. I have given it some serious abuse this past two years, storm chasing, through countless floods to get good piccies and two weeks ago across the Staffs moorlands over mountainous snowdrifts.I bet it hates Netweather.

I like your setup, I have a similar set-up I have a garmin sat nav also. with the use of a usb little sat receiver that goes on the car window and then plugs into lappy and with the help of an auto route program that runs on lap top it turns lappy into a sat-nav what would be nice is to be able t overlay the weather map

I got caught filming whilst driving three years ago and it cost me 3 points and a £60 fine. Now i have some strong velcro on the bottom of my camcorder and on my dashboard. Sticky back velcro is pennies from Tesco and may save you points and a fine :-)

Hi,

I work for The One Show at the BBC and we are looking to chat with some British storm chasers following the news that Britain has more tornadoes than America.

If anyone seeks out a tornado, calls themselves a storm chaser, has great footage of British tornadoes or is a storm/tornado enthusiast, please do get in contact with me as I am looking to make a potential film on this.

My email is sarah.carson@bbc.co.uk and I really look forward to hearing from you.

Sarah
