Tropical Storm Norman

[Somerset Squall]

Tropical Storm Norman, the 14th named storm of the season, has formed close to the southern tip of Baja California. Intensity is 40kts. Norman has some deep convection covering the broad centre, but is unlikely to strengthen much further due to moderate shear and the fact that landfall on the Mexican coast is less than 24hrs away. Western Mexico and southwest USA are likely to receive some flooding from Norman over the next few days.

Norman Weak, But Providing Some Rain

Tropical Storm Norman formed in the East Pacific this morning. It currently has maximum 1 minute sustained winds of 40mph and a minimum central pressure of 1002mb. Norman is currently located about 130 miles NE of Cabo San Lucas, MX, and is moving briskly north at 16mph, meaning the storm will make landfall tonight. Norman currently looks very poor on satellite and should only get worse as it interacts with land more. It should continue to track north after it moves inland and dissipate quickly. While no significant impacts are likely, some heavy rain is falling in Mexico and Texas and may cause localized flooding.

[Somerset Squall]

Norman made landfall last night but has now moved westwards and emerged in the Gulf Of California. The land interaction, coupled with the shear, has weakened Norman to a 25kt tropical depression. Despite moving back over warm water, the narrow channel of the Gulf combined with the high shear argues against re-intensification, and instead Norman is expected to become a remnant low this afternoon.

Norman is about 130 miles (209 kilometres) West of Los Mochis, Mexico. It has top sustained winds of 30 mph (48 kph) and is moving westward at 7 mph (11 kph).
