Looks quite cold as well for the forseeable Things seem to of picked up after such a stressful ice decline Hope it continues and isn't a false start. Ice is still below 2007 but anything can happen i guess

It doesn't look great as others have said, but remember back in 2008 there was quite widespread snow even in the south of the UK, come late October. To allow a comparison, is there a comparable chart out there for 2008 at this time or indeed a month on from there?

Whilst I am not exactly forecasting such an event, there are certainly background signals out there, which indicate a probable, cool down from the northern parts.

Since we are now past the Equinox, this NH thread should and will be getting a lot more attention in my opinion. The time period to which I get interested in, is from approximately mid way through the Autumn Equinox right up to mid way though the Winter Equinox. Using this crude system, my excitable period would last from roughly the 7th November to the 6th February. In that timeframe, snow would be much more likely to settle IMBY and stick around.

Whatever opinion one has, if you keep your hopes and fears relatively low, then when the surprise comes along, they can be cherished, even more so.

I think by the middle of next week, we will see more widespread snowcover across the Northern hemisphere as the models are most certainly favouring pushing any cold air southwards across Russia in particular and the models have also been hinting at some cold air spreading quite far southwards into Canada and the US.

In terms of the ice, I think by the middle of next week, we may finally start too see sea ice reforming between the Canadian Islands and hopefully extent will start to rise more rapidly in the basin itself as it normally does in October.

Many Thanks for those comparisons with 2008. Whilst the time period I am interested in is 30 days away, we are not a million miles away from a similar pattern developing, in my opinion. What would be needed is a stronger build up of ice near Siberia and additional snowfall to spread further south and westwards towards our shores, simples!

Even if October snowfall came about, it would of course be a transient affair. But, that is not what the analysis of this thread is all about, it is simply geared towards keeping our eyes firmly fixated to all points, North and East of us. Further ahead, this thread will certainly assist us on the long journey towards proper Winter.

It's encouraging to see the webcam shots of snow appearing in the thread. Now you know the long slid into winter is well underway.

The tops of the Glencoe Mountain and Cairngorm Mountain recieved a dusting again yesterday, so it's looking good for regular snowfall on the high ground as we enter October. The last thing we want though is the same as last year. A sharp blast at the end of the month followed by unseasonably warm temps at altitude which saw the ski season really struggle to get underway.

-5 Isotherm looking like it could brush Northern Scotland next Saturday.
