I remember this spell of weather. The week leading up to the very chilly weekend had seen blustery showers with snow on the fells and air frosts. It was a cold October in a lengthy colder than average period that had started in July and ended with the bitter easterly of late November. I enjoyed autumn 1993 - its been a long time since we have seen a cold autumn on the scale of 1993. It came on the back of the very chilly october in 1992. We had a cold October in 1994 as well, but then a major flip in 1995 to record warmth..

There have been many winters when I have failed to see -9 degrees, the fact a clear night in mid Oct can produce such temps in Shap is very noteworthy.

I remember a similar early winter shock for Scotland in 1998, but in mid to late September.
I recall the TV news pictures of quite a bit of snow disruption. ( I had not too long arrived in England )
