A considerably milder month than the last 2 Januarys and the mildest since 2008 which was milder still! Had the current cold spell not arrived
on Saturday the figures would have been quite different. The theme of the month was long mild periods and brief cold spells while almost half of the rainfall came in 1 day with most of that in around an hour!

For Warminster Wiltshire ...

...

Average max = 7.91c (Highest = 11.6c on 21 Jan)
Average min = 3.30c (lowest = -3.6c on 17 Jan)
Mean = 5.60c

Dry days = 13
Precipitation day = 18 of which 4 = wintry
Rainfall = 54mm
11 May = the 1st completely dry day for 25 days!!

2 quotes by me:
-Nature is idyllic, you just need the time to stop and enjoy!
-Look up you never know what you may see!

Yatton, North Somerset

Overall: A mild month with occasional colder interludes, often windy (especially to start) but also often quite sunny with below average rainfall.

1st - 5th
The month began very disturbed and very wet. New Years Day saw rain clear away with showers on a strengthening wind follow behind. These showers were particularly heavy on the 2nd, accompanied by hail and briefly wet snowflakes. The 3rd was very stormy with gales and heavy rain which cleared later with showers. Pressure rose thereafter but gales continued late on the 4th and early on the 5th with scattered showers. Wind eased later on the 5th.

6th - 12th
A rather benign spell followed with high pressure persisting from the south. It felt very mild at times with 10.8C recorded on the 11th but it was also rather cloudy with occasional drizzle. Winds veered northerly later on the 12th as a cold front moved down introducing colder air.

13th - 17th
Much more seasonal. A renewed mid-latitude high locked in the previously-entered cold air giving a largely clear and frosty spell with a good deal of sunshine. The lowest minimum was -03.4C on the 17th. Cloud increased from the west later in the day.

18th - 27th
Another prolonged mild spell ensued with periods of rain and quite strong winds for a time, either from a westerly or northwesterly direction. There were several spells of rain, on the 19th, 24th and particularly the 26th. It became cooler from the northwest on the 26th with showers of hail during the afternoon. Showers continued, albeit more scattered on the 27th which was a much sunnier day.

28th - 31st
Winter tries to come back for good this time. High pressure with a light continental feed arrived with progressively colder temperatures and frosty nights. Light snow fell all day on the 30th but amounted to nothing and the 31st began on a very cold and frosty note, though not beating the earlier minimum from the 17th.

Monthly Ave. Temp: 05.2C (+0.8C)
Highest Max: 10.8C (11/01/2012)
Lowest Max: 01.0C (30/01/2012)

Highest Min: 08.1C (10/01/2012)
Lowest Min: -03.4C (17/01/2012)
Hours of Sun: 69.1

Total Rain: 081.1mm (-14.8mm)
Wettest Day: 16.0mm (03/01/2012)
Frosty Days: 8
Snowfall Days: 1
Snowlie Days: 0
Thunder Days: 0

I have also devised a scaling system for rating how a month has performed weatherwise. From averaging daily overall temperaure ratings, adding 0.1 per frost and deducting 0.1 from every day on average that snow doesn't lie, I come to a concluding number. My overall rating for this month, where an average January would score 6/10, is 4.9/10.
